The fellowship focuses on building a strong network of emerging scholars who can contribute to solving key regional and global challenges. Selected fellows are placed at different ARUA Centres of Excellence hosted by top universities across Africa, where they work alongside experienced researchers and interdisciplinary teams. The program encourages knowledge exchange, research mobility, and long-term academic partnerships between African institutions and international collaborators.
This fellowship is particularly aimed at early-career researchers who have completed their PhD within the last few years and are currently affiliated with African universities. The program supports research in a wide range of fields including science, engineering, social sciences, health, and development-related disciplines. By enabling researchers to access advanced academic environments and resources, ARUA seeks to strengthen Africa’s research output and global academic presence.

- Monthly Stipend: Fellows receive a monthly stipend of US$2,000 to support their living expenses during the fellowship period.
- Travel Support: Return airfare is provided between the fellow’s home country and the host institution.
- Accommodation Support: Modest accommodation assistance is offered during the fellowship stay.
- Research Access: Fellows are given access to institutional facilities, office space, and research infrastructure at host universities.
Eligibilities
- Applicants Must-
- Be an early-career researcher who has completed a PhD within the last few years
- Currently affiliated with a university in Africa
- Be engaged in research relevant to ARUA’s thematic areas and Centres of Excellence
- Demonstrate strong research potential and academic achievement
- Be willing to work at a host institution in another African country
