The Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship 2025-26 is an excellent opportunity. The fellowship is open to early-career researchers from around the world to help them become skilled research leaders in the field of engineering. This international fellowship is an initiative of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the United Kingdom’s national academy of engineering. The research fellowship aims to help researchers establish their independence, gain international recognition, and conduct research that has a meaningful impact on the field.

These international fellowships offer long-term financial support, helping fellows pursue innovative engineering research while also serving as ambassadors for the Academy and advocates for STEM disciplines. The Royal Academy of Engineering offers Research Fellowships each year to outstanding early-career researchers to support them in becoming future research leaders in engineering. The scheme’s objectives are to:

  • support the best early-career researchers in establishing their independence and international reputation
  • provide long-term support enabling the pursuit of an ambitious programme of engineering research and impact
  • develop ambassadors for the Academy and advocates for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines

The Academy welcomes applications from early-career researchers worldwide who have been awarded their PhD in the last four years. The scheme is funded by the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) and provides funding for five years. Additionally, the UK-based medical charity, Rosetrees, has co-funded two awardees from their previous cohorts. Each application is capped at a maximum contribution from the Academy of £625,000 over the five years, at 80% of full economic costs. Research Fellowships must be held at a UK higher education institution/university or at a UK research organisation eligible to receive UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding.

Each application can receive up to £625,000 from the Academy over five years, covering 80% of costs.. The host institution is responsible for providing the remaining costs. Eligibilities

  • Applicants must be an early-career researcher with a PhD that was awarded no more than four years before the deadline.
  • A three-month extension beyond the four-year limit may be allowed.
  • There are no nationality or age restrictions. Applicants from around the world can apply.
  • Moreover, Research Fellowships must be hosted at a UK higher education institution/university or a UK research organization eligible for UKRI funding.
  • The host institution must provide the fellow with the same level of support as a permanent employee.
  • Similarly, the proposed research must be within the field of engineering.
  • The host institution is also responsible for obtaining necessary work permits and covering related costs.
  • Applicants who previously applied but were unsuccessful may reapply.
  • Fellows must start their fellowship between 1 August 2026 and 31 October 2026.
  • Applicants must also secure formal approval from their host institution before applying.

Application Process

  • All applications must be submitted via the Academy’s online grants system. All applicants must first register and provide some basic login details to create a profile.
  • The application should be submitted by the applicant. They recommend leaving plenty
    of time to complete the application form ahead of the deadline and thoroughly
    going through your application before submission. While the guidance notes are
    embedded within the system itself, they recommend keeping the document to hand
    when completing the application form.
  • The scheme has a three-stage selection process.
    • Stage one: general review: Each eligible application will be assessed by three non-expert reviewers (Academy Fellows or former Research Fellows). The selection of applications proceeding to the next stage assessment is made by a sift panel (consisting of Academy Fellows).
    • Stage two: expert review: Each selected application will be assessed by three expert reviewers who have expertise in the proposed research. This will be followed by a shortlist panel to select the most competitive applications to proceed to stage three: interviews.
    • Stage three: Interviews: Interviews will take place online. Each interview will be conducted by a panel of four Academy Fellows and will be 30 minutes long. This includes a five-minute presentation from the candidate. Following the interviews, the panel will rank the applications and select the top-ranked candidates for awards.
