The goal of the E4D Continuing Education Scholarship Programme is to enhance the knowledge and skills of future leaders by contributing to capacity development of professionals in low-income countries. The E4D program is funded through the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development.

The E4D Continuing Education Scholarship Programme covers the following continuing education programmes1: ETH Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) and Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).

The Engineering for Development (E4D) Continuing Education Scholarship Programme covers travel and accommodation costs for candidates from low-income countries to attend continuing education programs at ETH Zurich. The scholarship does not cover the program fees for the continuing education program.

Programmes & courses
Admission to the MAS, DAS and CAS programs generally requires a Master’s degree from an ETH, a degree recognized as equivalent from a different university or a comparable level of higher education.

Masters of Advanced Studies (MAS, MBA)
The MAS and MBA Programmes aim to give greater depth or interdisciplinary breadth to an original academic qualification or may lead to a change of profession. They correspond to at least 60 ECTS credits, require a Master’s thesis or project work and generally last between one year full-​time and two years part-time. Upon successful completion of the program, students are awarded the academic title of “Master of Advanced Studies ETH” (MAS ETH) or «Master of Business Administration ETH» (MBA ETH).

Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS)
DAS programs aim to give greater depth or interdisciplinary breadth to an original academic qualification. They are aimed at university graduates who are working and wish to enhance their professional skills or specialize in a particular subject. They correspond to at least 30 ECTS credits and generally involve written project work or a thesis. They are organized in the form of block courses or courses on fixed days of the week and last one to two years. Successful participants are awarded a «Diploma of Advanced Studies ETH».

Certificates of Advanced Studies (CAS)
CAS programs aim to give greater depth or interdisciplinary breadth to an original academic qualification. They are aimed at university graduates who are working and wish to enhance their professional skills or specialize in a particular subject. They correspond to at least 10 ECTS credits and 150 contact hours and may involve written project work or a thesis. They are organized in the form of block courses or courses on fixed days of the week and last one to two years. Successful participants are awarded a «Certificate of Advanced Studies ETH»

The following expenses will be covered by the scholarship (for the successful candidate):

  • Economy roundtrip ticket (max. 2’000 CHF)
  • Visa fees
  • Living allowance for the duration of the program
  • ETH general tuition fee waiver (660 CHF per semester)

Eligibilities

      Eligibility of the candidate

  • The candidate must hold a completed and recognised Master’s degree from a university and proof professional working experience of at least 2 years.
  • A minimal English standard of TOEFL level C1. If the continuing education programme requires a minimal level in another language, proof of this level should also be submitted.
  • The scholarship is open to candidates from countries classified in the DAC-list of the OECD.
  • Candidates need to be accepted by the School for Continuing Education, ETH Zurich as well as the MAS, DAS or CAS programme office.
  • All programmes of the ETH Zurich continuing education programmes (MAS/CAS/DAS) are eligible for the scholarship.
  • Only candidates who are admitted to an ETH MAS, DAS or CAS programme based on his/her academic and professional qualifications are considered for a scholarship. Candidates must apply to both (I) a continuing education programme and (II) to the E4D scholarship. Please contact the programme coordinator of your chosen continuing education programme concerning the admission process timeline in order to be able to obtain an admission letter before the E4D scholarship application deadline.

Application Process

The application process comprises two steps:

  1. Application to the selected MAS, DAS or CAS program (independent from the E4D application).
  2. Application to the E4D Continuing Education Scholarship Programme

Note: Candidates will only be considered for an E4D Continuing Education Scholarship if admitted to an ETH MAS, DAS or CAS program. The admission confirmation letter from the School for Continuing Education for the respective semester is the compulsory part of the E4D application.

  • Step 1: Application to MAS, DAS or CAS program
    Consult the program webpage and/or the program management to receive information on the deadlines, program fees, application procedures and application documentation for the selected MAS, DAS or CAS program.
  • Step 2: Application for the E4D Continuing Education Scholarship
    Compulsory application documentation:

    • CV7 of the candidate
    • MSc or Masters Diploma and academic transcript(s) including grades
    • 1-2 page application letter, stating the motivation to attend the program and the impact of the candidate’s career development and beyond.
    • Two professional references
    • Formal admission letter by the School for Continuing Education confirming that the candidate is admitted to the MAS, DAS or CAS program.
    • Certificate of employment. The certificate of employment letter must be sent to the E4D program office directly through the employer (and not the candidate)
    • Certificate of English level (minimum TOEFL level C1). If the program requires a minimal level in another language, proof of this acquired level must also, be submitted.

Note: Candidates will only be considered for an E4D Continuing Education Scholarship if admitted to an ETH MAS, DAS or CAS program. Applicants are encouraged to contact the program coordinator of their chosen program to know the time frame of the admission process so that they are able to obtain the admission letter before the deadline for the scholarship application.
