The African School of Regulation (ASR) aims to be a center of excellence for independent discussion and knowledge exchange to improve the quality of African energy regulation and policy. It was launched in 2023 with a very specific goal: to train the people who will run Africa’s energy future. They aren’t interested in just teaching theory from a textbook; they focus on the “trade” of regulation. This means learning how to set fair electricity prices, how to manage a power grid that uses both coal and solar, and how to make sure energy companies play fair while still making enough profit to keep the lights on.

The school is a massive collaboration. It brings together big names like the Florence School of Regulation (which is world-class in this field) and the University of Cape Town. By combining European expertise with the African context, they make sure the training actually works for the specific challenges found in African cities and rural areas.

Joining the African School of Regulation (ASR) is a strategic move for any professional who wants to stop being a spectator and start being an architect of Africa’s energy future. The power sector is currently undergoing a massive transformation, shifting from old state-run monopolies to complex systems involving private investment, renewable energy, and cross-border trading, yet the continent still faces a critical shortage of local experts who know how to manage these changes.

Please note that the scholarship applies only to the online component of the course. The optional one-week in-person component is not covered. Candidates are encouraged to explore other funding sources to support their participation in the in-person week and gain the full benefit of the course.
