The ARTEMIS Mentorship Program of the Max Planck Society (MPG) was established to build sustainable partnerships between early‑career researchers in Africa and junior scientists at Max Planck Institutes. The program is based on the idea that career development in science is strengthened through personal exchange, mentoring, networking, and mutual learning.
ARTEMIS aims to support researchers in Africa in shaping their academic and professional paths while enabling junior scientists at MPIs to gain mentoring experience and deepen their engagement with African research environments and cultures.

The ARTEMIS mentorship program of the Max Planck Society aims to build a partnership which fosters career goals through exchange of experience, networking and interpersonal relationship. This amongst many is what the Max Planck Society’s mentorship program offers to Partners at MPIs and Fellows at African universities and research institutions.
The program aims for interested mentees (graduates or doctoral candidates) at African universities and research institutes who are looking for an exchange of ideas on how to advance their studies and/or scientific career. With the support of the Max Planck mentors, the mentees are given the opportunity to shape their career path through networking, gaining scientific knowledge
and international experience while enhancing their personal and professional skills in order to define and realize their career goals.

Additionally, the program aims for junior scientists at MPIs (PhDs and Postdocs) as mentors, who are interested in a scientific exchange with graduates, doctorates and junior researchers in African countries and the African cultural environment. The goal is to act as a sparring partner for the fellow mentees in Africa in completing scientific studies and to exchange ideas with the
mentee about how to pursue a scientific career. Also, the mentors should provide their knowledge and experience on a scientific and, where appropriate, on a personal level.
The aim of the program is to foster mutual learning between both partners. Participants are given the opportunity to improve their communication and leadership skills, develop their intercultural competence, and broaden their scientific and professional perspectives through sustained exchange and collaboration. In addition, early-career researchers receive advice and guidance on continuing their studies, applying for scientific positions, and preparing project proposals, as well as the opportunity to gain international experience through visits to the Max Planck Institutes.
Through this program, the Max Planck Society wants to contribute to the development of the next generation of researchers, leaders, and professionals in African countries.
