DEVELOP, part of NASA’s Applied Sciences Program, addresses environmental and public policy issues through interdisciplinary research projects that apply the lens of NASA Earth observations to community concerns around the globe. Bridging the gap between NASA Earth Science and society, DEVELOP builds capacity in both participants and partner organizations to better prepare them to address the challenges that face our society and future generations. About the Participants
Who?
There is no standard DEVELOP participant. As an interdisciplinary program conducting feasibility projects, anyone with an interest in Earth science is welcome to apply. DEVELOP accepts participants with skills in a variety of fields, as well as from different phases of their career (currently enrolled students, recent graduates, early career professionals, and transitioning career professionals). Applicants with a strong interest in Earth sciences, remote sensing, environmental science, computer science, GIS, technology, and environmental policy are strongly encouraged to apply. What?
Participants should expect to spend their time conducting a literature review on the scope, methodologies, and types of NASA remote-sensing data applicable to their project. They will also utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote-sensing data to conduct application projects that partner with organizations that can benefit from enhanced decision-making tools. Each DEVELOP team creates the same set of deliverables including a poster, presentation, technical report, and optional video as the program puts an emphasis on building capacity to communicate project results to a variety of audiences. Participants also partake in personal development activities, like personality typing and team building, as well as networking opportunities with scientists and partner organizations.
How?
Participants are placed on interdisciplinary teams ranging in size from three to six participants. The team works under the guidance of a NASA or partner organization mentor, DEVELOP management at their location, and the DEVELOP National Program Office.

- DEVELOP is a unique opportunity and each participant benefits differently. Generally, participants can expect to enhance their personal and professional development. Participants are given the opportunity to improve their skill sets in science communication, technical writing, poster and oral presentation design, video creation, research, collaboration, technical capabilities, and networking, to name a few.
- Some universities may offer credit for projects with DEVELOP. Participants interested in receiving credit for the project will need to arrange this with their school to make sure the project meets any necessary requirements. Prior to the term beginning, participants interested in pursuing school credit can outline and communicate any requirements to their Center Lead for consideration. It is the student’s responsibility to meet deadlines and ensure all paperwork is completed to fulfill the requirements.
- DEVELOP participants are paid on an hourly basis. Rates are based on your current level of education, applicant classification, and locality. If selected for an interview, you may ask your interviewer for your specific hourly rate, otherwise you can email the National Program Office stating your current education level, applicant classification, and location(s) to which you would apply for rate information.
Eligibilities
General Eligibility Requirements:
- Strong interest in Earth science and remote sensing
- At least 18 years of age by the start of the term for which you are applying
- Minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale at current school (or last school for those not presently enrolled)
- Ability to provide personal transportation to and from the DEVELOP location
- U.S. citizenship is required to apply to some DEVELOP locations (refer to the Apply Page on the website for locations able to accept non-U.S. citizens)
Each applicant must also meet the below additional requirements specific to their applicant classification:
Currently Enrolled Student:
Students currently enrolled in school (high school, community college, college, or university); open to all majors and education levels
o U.S. Citizens:
- Evidence of enrollment at a school (copy of unofficial transcripts)
o Non-U.S. Citizens:
- Evidence of enrollment at a U.S. accredited university or college located in the United States (copy of unofficial transcripts)
- If selected – proof of approved CPT authorization approving your participation in the program for the duration of the term to which you are applying
Recent Graduate:
Individuals who graduated with a degree (high school, Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or PhD) within the past two years; open to all majors
o U.S. Citizens:
- Evidence of successful completion of a degree (transcript reflecting graduation date)
o Non-U.S. Citizens:
- Evidence of successful completion of a degree at an accredited university or college in the United States (transcript reflecting graduation date)
- If selected – proof of approved OPT authorization approving your participation in the program for the duration of the term to which you are applying
Early Career Professional/Transitioning Career Professional:
Individuals out of school for more than two years at the start of the term to which they are applying; includes individuals who are early in their career, transitioning to a new career field, or returning to the workplace after an absence
o U.S. Citizens:
- Evidence of successful completion of a degree (transcript reflecting graduation date)
o Non-U.S. Citizens:
- Evidence of successful completion of a degree at an accredited university or college in the United States (transcript reflecting graduation date)
- If selected – proof of approved OPT authorization approving your participation in the program for the duration of the term to which you are applying or legal permanent resident status
