Applications for the Future of the American Child Reporting Fellowship 2023 are open now.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report in February showed record levels of sadness in teen girls, as well as increased sexual violence. It’s the latest evidence that American children are not developing as well as they could physically, mentally, and emotionally, with factors ranging from environmental stressors to COVID and obesity.

While few newsrooms have a beat dedicated to children, audience engagement shows that communities crave information and resources that will help them support and bolster their children’s prospects. Beyond test scores and juvenile crime statistics, stories examining solutions to problems should also be on a reporter’s to-do list.

The National Press Foundation is continuing an in-depth look into child well-being by hosting the “Future of the American Child” journalism training.

The National Press Foundation’s mission is to “make good journalists better.” NPF educate journalists on the complex issues of the day and train them to use the latest reporting tools and techniques. The foundation recognizes and encourages excellence in journalism through its awards and fellowships.

Since 1976, the foundation has provided in-person professional development opportunities to thousands of editors, producers, and reporters, helping them better understand and explain the effects of public policy on readers and viewers. All NPF programming is free and on the record.

National Press Foundation is funded by journalism organizations, foundations, corporations, and individual benefactors.

Through the novel coronavirus pandemic, NPF programs were held all-virtual. Now, the programs are held in the nation’s capital, around the United States, and overseas. NPF brings together leading authorities to discuss significant issues ranging from health and economics to politics and policy. NPF produces a digital curriculum from these fellowships and briefings that are posted to their website, allowing journalists across the world to access the best expertise and enhance their reporting.
