Hiroshima University has established the Hiroshima University Global Doctoral Fellowship to support international doctoral students by providing an environment where they can focus on their research, fostering their growth so that they can contribute to Japan’s future in science, technology, and innovation and become global leaders.

This program seeks individuals with a broad perspective and knowledge, sound judgment, and the ability to take action—those who can leverage these qualities to contribute to Japan’s future in science, technology, and innovation and to advance efforts that make the world a better place. In particular, they are looking for applicants who intend to be directly involved in creating science, technology, and innovation in Japan after earning their doctoral degree at Hiroshima University. This will be a key consideration in their selection process.

Selected students will be employed as research fellows and provided with a salary and research funds. All graduate schools of Hiroshima University are participating in this program offering opportunities for students to enroll in doctoral courses or 4-year PhD programs starting in April 2026. The program is highly competitive as the total number of positions available is limited to a maximum of 10 students across all graduate schools, ensuring personalized support, research guidance, and funding for each selected fellow. This allows participants to fully engage in their research activities while benefiting from the university’s resources and academic environment.

Benefits

  • Selected doctoral students are employed as research fellows.
  • Fellows can receive a salary up to 144,000 yen per month (1,500 yen/hour, up to 96 hours/month).
  • Each student gets up to 400,000 yen per year for research expenses.
  • Support lasts for up to 3 years (or 4 years for students in a four‑year doctoral program).
  • The fellowship helps students concentrate on their doctoral research in a stable environment.
  • Fellows are expected to participate in activities like study abroad programs and skill‑building/career development provided by the university.

Eligibilities

  • International students who will enroll in a doctoral course or 4-year doctoral program of Hiroshima University in April 2026
  • Since the applicant will engage in research activities under an academic advisor, the applicant must obtain the prospective advisor’s approval before applying.
  • Those who are not expected to earn more than 2.4 million JPY in total income from January to December of the year in which support begins. (This annual income refers to stable sources such as regular salaries or executive compensation, and does not include income from paid internships, RA/TA positions, or part-time work.)
  • Those who, at the time support begins, are not receiving a Research Fellowship for Young Scientists from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, a Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship for international students, employment as an RA under the FOREST (Fusion Oriented REsearch for disruptive Science and Technology) program, or scholarships from their home country.

This program is designed for international students who are not eligible to apply for Hiroshima University’s SPRING program. Applicants are allowed to apply at the same time to the Next-Generation AI Researchers program. However, if a candidate is selected for both, priority will be given to the AI Researchers program, and the applicant cannot receive support from both programs at the same time.

Application Process

  • Access the online application form via Google Form given in Apply link, enter the required
    items and submit it.
  • You must use your Google account and authenticate with your password to access the form.
  • Upload all application documents in PDF format. Documents can be submitted in color or black-and-white.
  • The application documents must be filled out and submitted according to the program’s specified format
    without modification. If you apply using documents which are different from the specified format, your
    application may not be screened.
  • Complete and submit the “Check Sheet” along with the application, incomplete check sheets may result in the application being disregarded.
  • Revisions after submission are not allowed, ensure all documents are error-free before submitting.
