The Branco Weiss Fellowship, established in 2002 and managed by ETH Zurich, is a global program welcoming highly skilled researchers across various fields. It offers a platform for individuals willing to discuss and address significant societal, cultural, political, or economic matters that transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries. This fellowship, characterized by its international and interdisciplinary approach, encourages collaboration and dialogue among diverse fields of study. A Branco Weiss Fellow is expected to embark on an innovative research endeavor, taking full advantage of the freedom provided by the fellowship. A successful fellow also demonstrates a readiness to engage in discussions regarding pertinent social, cultural, political, or economic issues within their specific field of study. Members of the Branco Weiss Fellowship form a diverse, committed, and intellectually stimulating community. They convene at least once annually to share and deliberate on their research projects. The fellowship receives financial support from the late Swiss entrepreneur Dr. Branco Weiss and is managed as a fund by ETH Zurich. The program’s directors, responsible for both scientific and operational aspects, include Heidi Wunderli-Allenspach, former Rector at ETH Zurich (2007 to 2012) and a previous Full Professor for Biopharmacy at ETH Zurich; Angelika Steger, a current full professor of Computer Science at ETH Zurich; and Josef Zeyer, a former full professor of Environmental Microbiology at the Institute of Biogeochemistry and Pollutant Dynamics at ETH Zurich. They collaborate with other ETH Zurich faculty members to assess applications and conduct interviews with shortlisted candidates. The Branco Weiss Fellowship is based and managed by ETH Zurich, an institution established in 1855 in the heart of Europe. ETH Zurich is renowned for its exceptional scientific expertise, conducting research that benefits both society and industry while training highly skilled professionals. Notably, 21 Nobel Prize Laureates have been associated with ETH Zurich. Sharing knowledge across academia, industry, society, and politics is a key objective of ETH Zurich, alongside providing top-tier education, fostering outstanding research, and maintaining a robust international network.
