Call for New America Fellows Program 2027 is open now!!!
New America’s Fellows Program invests in thinkers—journalists, scholars, filmmakers, and public policy analysts—who generate big, bold ideas that have an impact and spark new conversations about the most pressing issues of our day.
In an age where journalism is dominated by the 24-7 news cycle, and academia is becoming ever more esoteric, these fellowships provide opportunities for talented individuals who need support to pursue more ambitious endeavors. Books. Films. Photo essays. Long-form storytelling. Policy projects. Work that gets to broad audiences and changes the way we think. Voices that represent the diverse backgrounds and ideologies of the American community.

New America fellows are selected on a highly competitive basis and serve—most on an adjunct basis, some full-time—for a one-year term. During that period, they aim to give them an intellectual home where they have the time, space, and resources to pursue their projects; a community where they can learn from one another; and opportunities to engage with others at New America and help shape the longer-term agenda and focus of our organization.
The Fellows Program aims to support New America Fellows in three primary areas: provide funding to support talented individuals to pursue ambitious endeavors, build a community grounded in cohort gatherings throughout the year, and provide access to platforms and partners that can support their work.

The Fellows Program is directed by Awista Ayub, and Peter Bergen serves as Senior Adviser to the program.
Since its inception in 1999, New America has been an intellectual home to more than 300 New America Fellows, resulting in the publication of more than 165 books, 18 feature-length documentary films, two podcast series, and several award-winning longform reporting projects.
Their Fellows have a significant impact on a wide range of important public policy matters, and each year they publish hundreds of articles and op-eds in major national and international media as they work toward completing their long-form projects. Their work has been cited and built upon in New America’s research and other distinguished publications, investigations, and policy journals while remaining familiar to audiences outside of policy circles.

The mix of stipends offered to each class varies widely depending on the type of applicants we take on and the funding they procure for that year. There is no need for candidates to address stipends, budgets, etc., in their proposal—you should use the space in your “Statement of Interest” to pitch your idea.
