The Global Africa Translation Fellowship is a grant program hosted by The Africa Institute in Sharjah, UAE. Its primary goal is to fund the translation of important African literary and scholarly works to make them accessible to a global audience. The program supports the translation of texts from the African continent and its diaspora. This includes works originally written in indigenous African languages or other languages that are being moved into English or Arabic (though other target languages are sometimes considered). It is part of the Institute’s broader “African Languages and Translation Program,” which seeks to challenge the dominance of Western-centric narratives by highlighting African intellectual and creative contributions.

This non-residential fellowship allows recipients to undertake their work outside The Africa Institute, Global Studies University (Sharjah, UAE). The fellowship aims to make significant texts in African and African Diaspora studies accessible to a wider global readership.
Applications will be reviewed by The Africa Institute’s faculty and research fellows. Selection will be based on the quality of the proposal and the applicant’s demonstrated capacity to complete the project. Funding will be disbursed in two installments: the first at the outset of the project, and the second upon its completion. Recipients are required to submit a copy of the completed translation for archival purposes. The translation will not be published or used for any other purposes without the awardee’s consent.

Eligibilities
- Applicants must be from the Global South.
- The proposed project must involve the translation of works from the African continent or its diaspora.
- The fellowship prioritizes translations into English or Arabic, though other languages may be considered if they align with the program’s goals.
- Eligible works include poetry, prose, critical theory, previously untranslated texts, or re-translations of classic works.
- Projects can be newly conceived or already in progress, provided they are feasible for completion within the fellowship period.
- Applicants must demonstrate their ability to complete a high-quality translation through a 2-page CV and a 4–5 page translation sample (showing the original text and the translation).
- If the work is not in the public domain, the applicant must provide a letter from the copyright holder confirming that translation rights are available for the project.

- Prepare your professional CV or resume, ensuring it does not exceed two pages and includes your institutional affiliation and key publications.
- A two-page summary (single-spaced, font 12) describing:
- the translation to be undertaken during the fellowship period, the significance of the work.
- justification for a re-translation if applicable.
- proposed dates of completion (Projects may be works-in-progress or new projects feasible within the grant timeframe).
- A 4–5-page sample (double-spaced, font 12) of the original text(s) alongside the translation.
- Kindly note that each attachment should not exceed 3 MB.
