The scholarship honors the late Barbara Huber, a pioneering legal scholar whose career at the Max Planck Institute spanned several decades. As a recognized expert in English law and the common law tradition, Huber was a trailblazer during an era when academic leadership opportunities for women were significantly restricted. Her work in comparative law and her dedication to cross-border understanding laid the groundwork for the Institute’s current international orientation. This program encourages a new generation of scholars to pursue research with the same intellectual rigor and global perspective she championed throughout her distinguished career.
The program is built upon the Institute’s unique three-pillar structure, which allows researchers to embed themselves within specific academic departments based on their focus area. These departments include Criminal Law, which explores the fundamental principles of criminal liability and the evolution of penal sanctions in a digital world; Public Law, which focuses on the law of public security and danger prevention; and Criminology, which utilizes innovative methods to explore the psychological and environmental drivers of deviant behavior. This multidisciplinary approach ensures that scholars can approach their research from various angles while benefiting from specialized expertise.

The selection committee specifically seeks projects that offer more than just basic updates to existing literature, prioritizing research that introduces entirely new perspectives or identifies previously unexamined legal and social phenomena. By bringing together doctoral candidates, postdocs, and senior professors from diverse international backgrounds, the program creates a vibrant atmosphere for legal theory and empirical social science. Scholars in residence participate in colloquia and workshops that often lead to long-term international collaborations and significant academic breakthroughs. Scholars benefit from one of the world’s most comprehensive specialist libraries in criminal law and criminology, ensuring they have access to nearly every resource required for their studies. In this high-performance environment, the Barbara Huber Scholarship acts as a powerful catalyst. It transforms individual research projects into meaningful contributions that help shape the future of global legal policy, security governance, and the broader understanding of justice in society.
