The International Green Gown Awards recognise, celebrate and showcase exceptional sustainability initiatives from tertiary education institutions around the world. Established in 2014 and supported by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the awards have become one of the most prestigious recognitions of leading sustainability practice in education in the world.

The International Green Gown Awards are delivered by EAUC, and are supported by Australasian Campuses Towards Sustainability (ACTS), International Association of Universities (IAU) and the Higher Education Sustainability Initiative (HESI). The International Green Gown Awards are open to tertiary education institutions outside the UK, Ireland and Australasia. There is no limit on the number of applications or categories your institution can enter. Entry is free of charge, but if the institution can contribute, then they can give a suggested fee of $150 USD.

Awards will be given based on different categories, such as:

  • 2030 Climate Action
  • Benefiting Society
  • Creating Impact
  • Diversity, Equity and inclusion in Sustainability
  • Nature Positive
  • Next Generation Learning and Skills
  • Student Engagement
  • Sustainability Institution of the Year

Each categories have their criteria of their own. It is the applicant’s responsibility to submit under the appropriate category. The Awards organisers will not move entries between categories even if they feel a different category is more appropriate, unless in exceptional circumstances.

The International Green Gown Awards application process unfolds in two stages.

In Stage 1, institutions are required to submit their initial applications by 10 April. These submissions are then assessed by the judges, and a shortlist of finalists is announced on 4 June.

In Stage 2, the shortlisted projects are contacted in early June to provide further details and supporting information. A second round of judging follows, after which the winners are revealed during the week beginning 7 September.

EAUC is the leading body for sustainability in the post-16 education sector in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Primarily a membership body, they serve over 300 organizations while also working to change systems that enable sustainability action.  The ethos of the International Green Gown Awards is to ensure the lessons and examples of best practice are shared within the sector and beyond across the world.

  • Applicants are required to complete the application form in the “apply link” below with necessary information, your organisation’s logo and One image that represents your project (JPG or PNG format)
