WMI works to create social change through education and community building by providing bright young people in the developing world with student scholarships and skills training, building a network of grassroots leaders who are catalyzing community transformation.

The Wells Mountain Initiative or WMI is much more than just a financial aid program. It is a global movement designed to create social change from the ground up. Founded in 2005 by Tom Wells, the organization started with a simple idea. That idea is that the best people to solve problems in developing countries are the people who actually live there. While many other scholarships take the brightest students away to study in wealthy Western nations, WMI encourages them to stay. By supporting students as they study in their home countries, the organization ensures that local talent and skills remain where they are needed most.

Wells Mountain Initiative (WMI), fosters social change at the local level by building a global network of grassroots leaders who are catalyzing community transformation across 55 developing countries. They support young people who have proved to be unstoppable in the face of adversity and are deeply committed to leading change in their community. They fund their undergraduate studies in high-need sectors, help them lead social service projects during their academic career and stand alongside them to address any challenges, so that they successfully complete their studies.

Through special conferences and local fellowships, scholars from different countries connect and mentor each other. This creates a lasting bond that goes beyond just a classroom education.

A core value of this organization is the idea of giving back. WMI scholars participate in a program called Educate Your Own. This is where older graduates help raise money or provide support for the next generation of students. Every scholar also promises to do at least 100 hours of community service every year. This ensures that even while they are still in school, they are already making a positive difference in the lives of their neighbors. The program challenges these scholars to think critically about their surroundings and to become proactive problem-solvers rather than passive observers.
