The McCain Institute at Arizona State University (ASU) today announced it is accepting applications for the 2026 cohort of the McCain Global Leaders (MGL) program.
Entering its fifth year, the MGL program supports character-driven leaders from around the globe who embody Senator John McCain’s legacy of serving a cause greater than oneself. Previously known as Next Generation Leaders, the McCain Institute’s leadership program has prepared individuals to lead from a place of values and ethics since 2014.

A diverse group of up to 25 leaders who are working “in the arena” to advance democracy, human rights, and freedom will be selected for the 12-month non-residential fellowship. Applicants are selected through a competitive, open recruitment process. Though there is no age requirement, those selected are typically mid-career professionals between the ages of 25 and 45.
Applicants should possess a strong record of service and experience working directly on the global theme of “Advancing Freedom, Defending Rights, Creating Opportunity” as well as experience with their respective regional theme.
This is the fifth cohort of the McCain Global Leaders program, which continues to proudly unite leaders from around the globe who are dedicated to upholding the core values that Senator John McCain fought for his entire career.

The 2026 theme for the McCain Global Leaders program is Advancing Freedom, Defending Rights, Creating Opportunity. Additionally, each region has its own technical area of focus:
- Western Hemisphere: Building Partnerships, Advancing Migration Solutions
- Europe and Eurasia: Countering Authoritarians – Leveraging Freedom, Democracy and Human Rights
- Africa and the Middle East: From Protest to Policy – Growing Democracy for All
- Asia and Oceania: Creating Stability by Advancing Democracy and Freedom
Past McCain Global Leaders include professionals in the private sector, government, and NGOs who continue to leverage their extensive networks to develop future leaders of character and courage. Leaders will participate in three impactful in-person events, which will be enhanced by online learning. They include expert-led practical skills trainings and an integrated leadership development curriculum inspired by Senator McCain’s legacy and emphasize peer mentoring and group problem-solving.

Eligibilities
- Mid- to senior-career professionals who has at least five years of professional experience
- Strong working proficiency in English
- Actively engaged in issue areas related to the program’s global and regional themes
- Demonstrate a commitment to serving a cause greater than themselves
