Call for Business and Climate Media Initiative Seed Grants 2025 is open now!!!

The Asia region accounts for over half of global greenhouse gas emissions, largely credited to its role as a global supply chain hub, growing population and rapid industrialization over recent decades. Businesses and the private sector are major contributors to the climate crisis, and so must be at the heart of climate action in order to bring about meaningful impact. It is also important that the transition to net zero is just, fair and equitable for the workers involved, a process that also makes companies more resilient for the long term. Media coverage of business engagement with the climate crisis—and the action needed by governments and multilateral development banks to facilitate this—must ramp up to improve accountability, highlight solutions and inform public demand for change.

With this in mind, EJN is offering seed grants of up to 8,000 EUR for media outlets in Thailand and Indonesia to launch new and innovative reporting initiatives that will increase awareness of these topics. This round of grants is awarded as part of EJN’s Business and Climate Media Initiative project. The objective of these grants is to increase the capacity of the media in Thailand and Indonesia to provide innovative and solutions-oriented information on business and private sector engagement with climate change to the public and policymakers. The grants are intended to seed new programs, columns or sections that focus on these issues. Over the grant period, they expect that selected media outlets will each design and pilot a new program, producing at least five stories or episodes as proof of concept. An expectation of this funding is for activities to continue beyond the lifetime of the project—applicants should outline how work could be incorporated into existing programming in the future.

The core reporting themes sought by the EJN grant focus on the intersection of the private sector and climate action, specifically covering solutions like climate financing, carbon trading, and innovations in renewable energy, circular economy, and green technology. Applications should also address accountability by exposing greenwashing and examining the enforcement and effectiveness of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) frameworks. Furthermore, the grant aims to support coverage of industry-specific challenges in sectors such as food and agriculture, transportation, construction, and energy, with a particular emphasis on amplifying the voices of marginalized and minority communities to create dialogue and intensify public pressure on policymakers.

The review process involves a panel of international judges, including Internews staff and environmental journalism experts, who will evaluate applications based on several criteria: they will assess the overall quality of the proposal and its relevance in contributing to the grant’s objectives. They will also determine the potential impact and the quality and effectiveness of the project design, alongside the innovative characteristics of the planned activities. Final evaluation factors include the financial viability and cost-effectiveness, the sustainability of the activities once the supported work is completed, and the proven ability of the applicant to successfully carry out the project.
