The Hodder Fellowship at Princeton University is a prestigious award offered annually to artists and writers of exceptional promise. It is specifically designed to provide recipients with the freedom and support to pursue independent projects during the academic year. The fellowship is not simply about rewarding past accomplishments, but about recognizing extraordinary potential and giving space for new, ambitious creative work to flourish.
Potential Hodder Fellows come from a wide range of disciplines. They may be composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, translators, writers, or other kinds of artists and humanists who demonstrate originality and vision. The guiding principle behind the fellowship is that candidates should possess “much more than ordinary intellectual and literary gifts.” In fact, the program’s emphasis lies more on “promise than performance,” making it especially valuable for early-career individuals who show signs of becoming transformative figures in their fields.

Given the strength and competitiveness of the applicant pool, successful candidates are often those who have already achieved a significant early milestone, such as publishing a first book, staging a noteworthy performance, or producing an innovative body of work that has drawn recognition. However, the fellowship is not meant as a reward for past success but as an investment in future contributions.
The purpose of the Hodder Fellowship is to grant artists what Princeton University describes as “studious leisure.” By relieving Fellows of professional obligations such as teaching or other full-time work, the fellowship creates the ideal conditions for uninterrupted creativity. Fellows spend the academic year immersed in their projects, developing substantial new work that might not otherwise have been possible within the demands of everyday professional life.
