This prestigious Conservation Guest Scholars Program is designed for established scholars and professionals who have attained significant recognition and made noteworthy contributions to the field of cultural heritage conservation.

The program aims to foster innovative research by providing scholars with the opportunity to delve into topics that will generate new insights and enhance understanding within the conservation community. Scholars selected for this program will spend three months in residence at the Getty Conservation Institute, during which they will concentrate exclusively on their individual research projects, free from the distractions of regular work-related commitments.

During their residency, scholars will have unparalleled access to the extensive research collections housed at the Getty Center and the Getty Villa. They will also have the chance to connect and collaborate with fellow Getty scholars, interns, and other participants, thereby enriching their intellectual experience and expanding their professional networks within the vibrant scholarly community at Getty.
Annual Theme: Provenance
This year’s program invites innovative proposals on provenance and related areas, exploring themes like the history of collecting and the ethics of art ownership. Scholars will engage with Getty resources and researchers, contributing to a dynamic community focused on the significant field of provenance studies. The residency includes access to rare materials that support this research and offers opportunities for collaboration and new insights.
The Getty Conservation Institute welcomes applications from researchers and practitioners from diverse national and cultural backgrounds who are engaged in conservation, historic preservation, heritage science, and related disciplines. Candidates must possess a minimum of seven years of relevant professional experience, complemented by a demonstrated record of publications and contributions that have advanced the field. The Institute particularly encourages applications from individuals belonging to groups that are underrepresented in cultural heritage conservation.
It is important to note that proposals centered on postdoctoral research or those aimed at contributing to a PhD or other academic degrees will not be accepted.
Participants in the program will benefit from a rich, immersive three-month residency at the Getty Conservation Institute, allowing them to focus wholly on their research pursuits while participating in the dynamic academic environment at Getty. This opportunity promises to be a transformative experience for those committed to making significant strides in the field of cultural heritage conservation.

Eligibilities
- Open to researchers and practitioners of all nationalities in conservation, historic preservation, heritage science, and related fields.
- Minimum of 7 years of professional experience required.
- Applicants must have an established record of publications and contributions to the field.
- Individuals from underrepresented groups in cultural heritage conservation are encouraged to apply.
- Proposals for postdoctoral research or research contributing to a PhD/academic degree are not considered.
- Recent PhDs in chemistry, physical, or material sciences should instead apply to the Postdoctoral Fellowship in Conservation Science.
- Previous Conservation Guest Scholar Grant recipients may reapply after 6 years.
- Current Getty staff and their immediate family are not eligible.

- Always continue via “Applications: In Progress” to avoid duplicates.
- Upload Required Documents
- Project Proposal (max 5 pages, double-spaced): include description, methodology (Getty-specific work), expected outcome, contribution, qualifications, and use of Getty resources.
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): full record of professional activities.
- Selected Bibliography (max 2 pages, single-spaced): cite key scholarly works (not your own) framing the project.

- Upload all documents and review carefully before final submission. Applicants will be notified of decisions by March–April 2026.
