The MHCH Foundation’s Global Rural Nursing Virtual Collaboration Learning Grant (GRNVCLG) provides funding to programs that promote collaboration, learning, and global connections. The grant opportunity is designed to foster partnerships between international nursing students and educators who collaborate on rural community health projects.
Universities, or other institutions involved in nurse education, that have partnered with an international university or other nursing institution, may co-apply for this grant opportunity.

The MHCH Foundation’s Global Rural Nursing Virtual Collaboration Learning Grant (GRNVCLG) provides funding to programs that promote collaboration, learning, and global connections. Universities, or other institutions involved in nurse education, must partner with an international university, or other institution, to co-apply for this grant opportunity. These international collaborations will foster global connections and deeper research as the groups of nursing students and nurse educator(s) individually launch rural/remote healthcare community projects in their respective countries. The two partnered international groups can create virtual and collaborative learning environments to support their projects. This grant opportunity is for projects that focus on:
- Furthering students’ knowledge of rural/remote population health near or within their own communities.
- Improving the understanding of different cultures and the status of rural/remote healthcare around the globe.
- Sharpening virtual networking and telecommunication skills.
- Fostering ongoing global relationships and connections.
- Encouraging creative sharing of results.
Total Funding Amount: $15,000 USD,
Number of Awards: Three (3) $5,000 USD grants will be awarded. Each grant will be split between the partnered international groups.
Recipients awarded for the grant must split funding 50/50. Each partnered institution will receive separate awards of $2,500 directly from the MHCH Foundation for a total program award of $5,000. A maximum of 30%, or $750, for each university/institution may be used for indirect expenses.
Countries that may have additional technology challenges, such as issues with Internet bundles, technology or equipment, are encouraged to contact Corey Kilgore at [email protected] no later than July 15. Additional needs will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and will require a specific application with reporting requirements for expenditures.
Awarded grant funding must be used between September 1, 2022 and December 15, 2023.

Eligibilities
University Nursing Programs/Nursing Education Institutions partnered with another University Nursing Program/Nursing Education Institution from a separate country are eligible to apply. The collaboration must be led by a designated University/Institution Nurse educator who will oversee student and program outcomes. Each partnered international group should involve 3rd or 4th year BSN nursing students. Other program requirements include:
- Provide a letter of support for the program by each applying partner’s dean, department chair for the school of nursing, or the institution’s executives/supervisor point of contact.
- The program must take place between September 1, 2022, and December 15, 2023.
- Applicants must be willing to share program information with GRNEN on a scheduled, quarterly basis during agreed-upon check-in meetings.
- A final report must be submitted within 30 days after the end of the funding period describing the program, how it met the eligibility requirements and the program outcome.
- Applicants must present a final virtual presentation on program outcomes during the first quarter of 2024.
- Partnering universities must show proof of a plan designated to create cohesion between the universities and foster ongoing virtual relationships among students and educators.
- The application must demonstrate evidence that students will be required to directly engage with an identified rural/remote community. Projects designed to address an identified urgent need will be given priority. Please note that direct patient care is not required and projects in urban environments will not be eligible despite the need.
- The application should demonstrate a plan for sharing the students’ learning journey along the way with the Global Rural Nursing Exchange Network (GRNEN). This requirement may be satisfied through the use of videos, photography, art, or any other creative medium. Innovation and creativity are highly encouraged.
- Applicants are required to leverage the GRNEN virtual networking and collaboration tool on the website at GRNEN.org. Individual grant projects will receive a unique, private learning community that will support classroom connections via the collaboration tool for co-creating and updating documents and classroom assignments, furthering discussions, and scheduling videoconferences.
- 2021-2022 grant recipients are eligible for the 2022-2023 grant program and may submit a new application for consideration.
