Seminar of The Jean Monnet Project in Thessaloniki, Greece

The Jean Monnet Project EU Vadis “Policy Discourses on Intercultural Dialogue, EU Values and Diversity” of the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki, GREECE,  in cooperation with the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for European Constitutionalism and Religion(s) of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki is organising a summer seminar from the 30^th of June until the 3^rd of July 2019 entitled “Challenges for European Societies”. The total duration of the above summer seminar is 27 hours and it will be held in ENGLISH at the conference room of the University of Macedonia (1^st floor) in daily afternoon sessions. The speakers of the seminar are distinguished University Professors, academics, experts and lawyers. More specifically, the speakers are:

The seminar addresses several of the most contemporary challenges of the social, economic and political landscape of Europe. It aims at providing learners with a critical overview of the societal implications of human trafficking, migration and asylum from whole new and different perspectives as well as the prevailing economic ideologies in European societies. Participants will also have the chance to exchange views and experiences regarding citizen participation, human rights, justice and the rule of law, diversity including ideas on best practices. The topics discussed are the following:

• Budgetary Challenges for the EU in view of the 2021-2027 programming period (Professor D. Skiadas)
• Challenges of fundamental Rights in Europe (Dr. D. Rajska)
• Education for Migrant and Refugee children (Dr. D. Rajska)
• Diversity at the Workplace (Associate Professor D. Anagnostopoulou)
• De-integration, Brexit and referenda (Associate Professor L. Papadopoulou)
• Religious minorities (Associate Professor L. Papadopoulou)
• Working Conditions and the EU Social Pillar (Professor A.S. Lind)
• Respecting Choices, Beliefs and Values at the End of Life: Dementia, Relationality and Care (Professor Rosie Harding)
• Fake news, propaganda and incitement to hatred (Assistant Professor N. Panagiotou)
• Social Exclusion and marginalised groups (Associate Professor D. Anagnostopoulou)
• Contemporary challenges of freedom of expression (Dr. N. Gaitenidis)
• Democracy, rule of law and the radicalization of the public sphere (Associate Professor I. Papadopoulos)

The seminar is addressed to a broad audience, including legal practitioners, researchers in EU studies, teachers, students of economic, legal and political disciplines, local, regional and national authorities, opinion leaders and civil society.

The summer seminar is free of charge; there are no tuition fees as the relevant costs are covered by the Erasmus + European Program, Jean Monnet.

Certificates of attendance will be awarded to everyone. Participants passing the multiple-choice exam (40 questions) will be awarded a 3 Extracurricular ECTS certificate based on the decision of the General Assembly of the Department of International and European Studies of the University of Macedonia.
