The MESPOM program is an Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree in Environmental Sciences, Policy and Management operated by four leading European universities. It has been based on the idea that science, policy and management should be taught as three distinct but interacting knowledge and practice domains, which are necessary and essential to tackle any environmental issue. A defining characteristic of the MESPOM program is its diverse geographic settings, which span from bustling metropolitan hubs in Europe to tranquil island environments in Greece.

The two-year program is delivered in English and includes three semesters of taught courses followed by a fourth research semester. It is operated by a consortium of four European universities: Central European University (Austria), University of the Aegean (Greece), Lund University (Sweden), and the University of Manchester (UK). The program also involves 11 global partners and focuses on preparing students to address complex environmental challenges in international contexts. Students typically study at least three of the consortium universities over the course of the program.

The first two semesters, taught at CEU and the University of the Aegean, comprise mandatory and elective courses focused on scientific and technological as well as legal, economic, and political aspects of key environmental challenges and the society-environment interaction. The first year concludes with a summer internship, usually conducted in collaboration with an external partner organization.
During the third semester, students choose between specialized tracks in either preventive environmental strategies in the public and private sector (at Lund University) or environmental sciences and pollution control (at the University of Manchester). Both tracks emphasize hands-on research and practical experience in industries and laboratories. Finally, in the fourth semester, the students conduct their individual research projects and write Master’s theses at any of the main Consortium partners. This is often combined with internships at intergovernmental organizations, government, industry or NGOs in Europe or students’ home countries.
Throughout their studies, MESPOM students specialize in cutting-edge topics such as sustainable energy and climate change, biodiversity and conservation, urban sustainability, sustainable consumption and production, and environmental security and justice.
