The Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship Programme aims to enhance the mana of partner countries and Aotearoa New Zealand through manaakitanga – the act of hosting, supporting, and honouring manaaki scholars. Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships are only available to citizens from the eligible regions and countries. Eligible Pacific countries include: Fiji (postgraduate only), French Pacific (New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Wallis and Futuna), Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, North Pacific (Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Marshall Islands), Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu and some eligible Asian countries including Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Nepal, Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Viet Nam for Undergraduate Degree (3-4 years), Postgraduate Certificate (6 months), Postgraduate Diploma (1 year), Master’s Degree (1-2 years), PhD (3.5 years).

The Manaaki New Zealand scholarship programme aims to strengthen international relationships and support global development by developing leadership capabilities among students from developing countries through investment in education.

This initiative aims to achieve long-term goals while enhancing skills and expertise in science, business, humanities, and social sciences to contribute to the home nations of participants. The program also seeks to improve professional and technical skills among international students, promote sustainable development in partner countries, strengthen diplomatic and educational relations with New Zealand and other developing nations, and provide hands-on experience and problem-solving skills to address economic, social, and environmental challenges in their home countries.

Benefits

With a full Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship, scholars studying in New Zealand receive:

  • Full tuition fees.
  • Living allowance. This will help with basic living expenses. If you commence your scholarship study programme in your home country, your stipend will be adjusted to reflect the difference in living costs around the world.
  • And an establishment allowance to help with set-up costs in New Zealand. For example, you can use it for accommodation expenses, textbooks, or other study materials.
  • Medical insurance when you are in New Zealand.
  • Tutoring costs to assist with additional academic support if needed.
  • Travel to and from your own country. This is for travel from your own country at the start of the scholarship, and for return travel at the end of your scholarship.
  • Travel insurance.
  • Travel home during your scholarship. Scholars studying for over 1.6 years are entitled to travel home to visit family. We usually allow for one or two trips, depending on the length.
  • Reintegration allowance. This is to help with set-up costs upon your return to your home country.
  • Help with research and thesis costs for many postgraduate students.

All scholars must attend classes, complete compulsory assignments, and sit all exams. All scholars must meet all the course requirements of the educational institution on time. Academic and personal support is provided if required. The Scholarship will be terminated if you fail to meet these conditions.

Eligibilities

To apply for a Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship:

  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be 18 years old or older when they start their scholarship.
  • Citizenship: Applicants must be citizens of an eligible country in the scholarship program.
  • Residency Requirement: Applicants must have resided in their home country for at least two years before applying. Exceptions to this requirement are applicants who have been working for their home country on a diplomatic assignment (including their dependents) or those who have been enrolled in a course of study overseas.
  • Commitment to home country’s development: Scholars must be willing to contribute to their home country’s social or economic development for at least two years after completing their scholarship studies.
  • Work experience requirement: Postgraduate applicants must have relevant work experience. Work experience can be paid, unpaid, or voluntary, and must meet the following criteria:
    • One year of full-time work experience (i.e., 30 hours or more per week), OR
    • Two years of part-time work experience (i.e., up to 29 hours per week).

But Work experience is not required for:

  • Applicants who are in their final year of high school when they apply.
  • Applicants who apply in the academic year immediately after completing high school
  • Applicants who are in paid or unpaid employment.
  • Academic and English Requirements: All applicants must meet both the academic entry requirements and the English language requirements determined by the applicant’s preferred education institutions.General level of English expected for postgraduate and undergraduate study:Generally, to study for a postgraduate qualification, you must have at least:
    • An overall IELTS score of 6.5 and no band less than 6.0
    • a TOEFL score of 90 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21
    • An overall PTE Academic score of 58, with no communicative skills score less than 50
    • a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 176 with no bands less than 169.

    Generally, to study for an undergraduate qualification, you must have at least:

    • An overall IELTS score of 6.0 and no band less than 5.5
    • a TOEFL score of 80 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21
    • an overall PTE Academic score of 50, with no communication skills score less than 42
    • a Cambridge Academic English (advanced) overall score of 169 with no bands less than 162.
      Only shortlisted applicants need English language test scores.
  • Scholarship History: Former Manaaki Scholars terminated for inappropriate conduct are permanently barred from reapplying for the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships.
Eligible Regions: Open for Pacific and Asian countries.
