The Czech Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports, the Faculty of Social Sciences is able to offer a limited number of partial scholarships for students of all fee-based programs. For the academic year 2020/2021, a total of eight scholarships are available, designated for students from developing countries and countries going through a process of political and economic transition.

The successful scholarship holder will receive payment at the start of the Winter semester, no later than one month after they register for their studies and fulfillment of other prerequisites. The main prerequisite for the scholarship payment is the student’s prior payment of tuition fee for the Winter semester. No money will be paid in advance of the student’s arrival in Prague.

The scholarship is awarded on a year-to-year basis. Therefore, students have to submit a new application each year.

Scholarships will not be offered for the third year of study (Master’s degree) or the fourth year of study (Bachelor’s degree) under any circumstances.

Charles University was founded in 1348, making it one of the oldest universities in the world. Yet it is also renowned as a modern, dynamic, cosmopolitan and prestigious institution of higher education. It is the largest and most renowned Czech university and is also the best-rated Czech university according to international rankings. There are currently 17 faculties at the University (14 in Prague, 2 in Hradec Králové and 1 in Plzeň), plus 3 institutes, 6 other centers of teaching, research, development and other creative activities, a centre providing information services, 5 facilities serving the whole University, and the Rectorate – which is the executive management body for the whole University.

The Faculty of Social Sciences (FSV UK) is a part of one of Charles University. Shortly after the establishment of the university, FSV UK became a regional center of teaching and research in economics, sociology, political science, international relations, area studies, media studies and journalism.

Eligibilities

  • The scholarship can be awarded to students studying in one of the Faculty’s fee-based study programs in one of the first three years of study for Bachelor’s programs or the first two years of study for Master’s programs. This means the application can be submitted by current students in the first or second year of Bachelor’s studies or the first year of Master’s studies, or by a fresh applicant to any of their fee-based programs.
  • The applicants have to be from developing countries and countries going through a process of political and economic transition and have to state their needs of financial support within the application.

Application Process

Application has to include the following documents:

  • completed application form
  • motivation essay of no more than 1000 words, explaining why you need a scholarship, and what you hope to gain from your studies at Charles University
  • two letters of recommendation from teachers, who know you from your previous studies, including confirmation of your financial need (for fresh applicants for our programs)
  • one letter of recommendation from a Charles University academic who knows you from your studies at the Faculty, including confirmation of your financial need (for current students of our programs)

IMPORTANT: All scholarship applicants who are fresh applicants for one of their programs HAVE TO also lodge an online application for their selected study program and note the name of the program on their application for a scholarship. Without this, their application for a scholarship will not be considered.
