Call for applications for the 2024 Coimbra Group University Young African Scholarship Programme are open!
Coimbra Group Universities have been providing, since 2008, young researchers from universities in Sub-Saharan Africa with the opportunity to spend a short period (generally 1 to 3 months) at a Coimbra Group University to carry out part of their research there. Applicants from all African countries except Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco, and Tunisia are eligible under the Scholarship Programme for Young Researchers from the European Neighbourhood.

The Coimbra Group, which was set up in 1987, is an association now composed of 40 European universities. It aims to increase co-operation amongst its members by enhancing special academic and cultural ties and creating channels of information and exchange.
This scholarship program’s primary goals are to support scholars in developing academic and research connections around Europe and to allow them to continue their research projects that they are working on at their home institutions. The Coimbra Group Office is in responsibility of the administrative administration of the applications, while the participating Coimbra Group member universities provide financial support for the scholarships. The selection of candidates will be undertaken directly by the host universities. They may request additional documents. When the selection has been agreed upon, the host university may send a letter of invitation directly to the successful candidate.

Applicants should identify a research supervisor at the selected host university (through the website of the university of their choice, or by contacting the contact person at the selected host university) and provide his/her name and contact details in the application form. Applicants are expected to make contact with their research supervisor at the selected host university and submit a letter/e-mail of acceptance, together with their application form, which proves that the candidate has been accepted to carry out research under his/her supervision. The letter must clearly state the willingness of the tutor to supervise the work of the candidate during the research stay. This letter should be uploaded on the application form. Applications which do not fulfil this requirement will not be considered. The Coimbra Group Office is unable to help you with finding a supervisor.

Eligibilities
Applicants must fulfil ALL of the following criteria at the same time:
- Be born on or after 1 January 1979.
- Be nationals of and current residents in a country in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Be current staff members of a university or an equivalent higher education institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Be preferably of doctoral/postdoctoral or equivalent status.
- Be in possession of an acceptance letter/email from the tutor/supervisor with whom the work programme will be undertaken in the host institution. This document is mandatory.
- Use the Coimbra Group Office electronic application process.
- Apply for one university only. Multiple applications will not be considered valid.
- Submit all information in English only.
Application Process
- Candidates must indicate the name and contact details of an academic supervisor at the host university and provide proof of acceptance (a letter or e-mail).
- Applicants should provide the name and contact details of an academic supervisor in the receiving Coimbra Group University who will supervise their work during their stay abroad.
- All applicants are requested to provide a letter/e-mail of acceptance (to be submitted together with your application) written by the academic supervisor from the host university where you would like to carry out the proposed working plan. The letter should state that the supervisor is willing to work with you in case you obtain a Coimbra Group Scholarship.
- Applicants can select one institution only. Multiple applications from the same candidate will be rejected.
- Please fill in your application form only when you have all the data available (i.e. name of and letter of acceptance by supervisor at Coimbra Group University, etc.). Incomplete applications will be rejected, no exceptions will be made.
- Visit the Apply Link by clicking on the “APPLY NOW” button which will lead you to the application form directly.
- The dates of your stay should be agreed upon between the applicant and the academic supervisor at the Coimbra Group University. Typically this will be during the academic year 2024/2025.
