Bonnart Trust Ph.D. scholarship is for new MPhil/Ph.D. research students applying for a full-time MPhil/Ph.D. in the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy or in the School of Law, in any of the following departments:

  • Criminology
  • Geography
  • History, Classics, and Archaeology
  • Law
  • Philosophy
  • Politics
  • Psychosocial Studies.

The scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding candidate whose research topic explores one or more of the themes which are of concern to the Trust: diversity, minorities, and social justice.

The purpose of the Bonnart Trust is to ‘establish and maintain scholarships at universities in the United Kingdom for research at the postgraduate level into the nature of racial, religious and cultural intolerance with a view to finding a means to combat it’.

Bonnart Trust Ph.D. students join a network of Bonnart scholars. The Trust not only supports its scholars financially, but also through networking, sponsoring, and mentoring activities and encourages them to engage with a wide range of audiences inside as well as outside academia.

Upon completion of their Ph.D., Bonnart scholars are required to prepare a short summary of their thesis which is suitable for publication on the Bonnart Trust website.

The Trust’s vision is to contribute to a tolerant and inclusive society in which people of all ethnicities, religions, and cultures live together with mutual understanding, and respect for the rights of the individual. Following its founder’s wishes, the Trust supports postgraduate researchers at UK universities.

From 2002 to 2015/2016, the Trust supported 24 scholars studying for PhDs at University College London and the London School of Economics and Political Science. Since the Autumn of 2016, the Trust supports Ph.D. students at Birkbeck, University of London. From Autumn 2020, the Trust also supports part-time MA/MSc students.

Separately from The Bonnart Trust, in 2000 Freddy Bonnart-Braunthal endowed a scholarship in his name at UCL. This has the same broad purposes as The Bonnart Trust and is administered independently by UCL.
