The UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences aims to reward the projects and activities of individuals, group of individuals, institutions, and non-governmental organizations for their outstanding contribution to the improvement of human life. 

The Prize has been established by UNESCO’s Executive Board in 2008. It plays an important role in advancing knowledge and strengthening capacities for sustainable development. It directly contributes to the 2030 goals, particularly those aimed at improving the quality of human life, without leaving anyone behind. “BETTER LIFE: SDG 1, 2, 5, 8 and 10″.

Funded by the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, the Prize, which has a monetary value of US$ 300,000, is divided equally among up to three laureates. The laureate(s) also receive(s) a certificate and an “Integración Tribal” statuette by Equatorial Guinean artist Leandro Mbomio.

In a perpetually changing world, science is essential for addressing the most urgent challenges, such as emerging diseases, epidemics, pandemics, biodiversity loss, diminishing natural resources, food security, climate change, and natural disasters. The sciences, particularly the life sciences, play a crucial role in helping societies achieve global objectives and propose sustainable solutions. By supporting scientific advances in these fields, They can not only improve the quality of life but also secure a more resilient and equitable future for all.

The Prize was established by UNESCO’s Executive Board, to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development as well as UNESCO’s global priorities.

For its ninth edition, the UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences is being awarded to three outstanding scientists whose work contributes significantly to improving the quality of human life. A new scholarship for young women scientists in Africa is also being awarded for the first time.

In a constantly changing world, science is essential for addressing the most pressing challenges, such as epidemics, biodiversity loss and food insecurity. In particular, life sciences play a crucial role in helping societies not only improve quality of life, but also ensure a more resilient and equitable future for all.

Three researchers from Saudi Arabia, Cameroon and China have been honored by UNESCO for their outstanding contributions to the advancement of medicine and public health, in fields ranging from the fight against sunstroke and malaria to the prevention of emerging infectious diseases.

Eligibilities

  • Applicants: This prize is open to eminent scientists, groups, institutions, or NGOs in fields like medicine, biology, agriculture, environmental sciences, and new technologies. And their contributions must improve quality of life through transformative discoveries (e.g., medical innovations, sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, or new technologies.
  • Designated Authorities for Application Submission: UNESCO Member States through their National Commissions or Non-governmental organizations in official partnership with UNESCO that are active in relevant fields covered by the Prize.

Please note that each Member State or Non-governmental Organization may submit up to five nominations.

Application Process

  • Applications may be submitted in two ways:
    • Designating authorities can invite candidates who they wish to endorse to apply.
    • Candidates must submit their application to a National Commission through the online process.
  • Only applications that have been officially endorsed are received by the UNESCO Secretariat.
  • Candidates must register online. After registration, candidates will receive a temporary password to access and complete an online form in English or French.
  • After registration, candidates must fill in the online application form in English or French. The application should include the following:
    • Background information
    • Outline of the candidate’s contribution to the Prize’s objectives
    • Summary of the research work
    • List of major scientific publications
    • All supporting material (e.g. publications, photos, videos) must be transmitted electronically through the online system.
  • Once complete, applications may be submitted in two ways:
    • Candidates invited to apply by a NGO can upload proof of their endorsement and submit to the UNESCO Secretariat.
    • Candidates can submit their application to a National Commission through the online process.
  • The UNESCO Secretariat receives only applications that have been officially endorsed. The candidate should make all efforts to ensure endorsement with the relevant National Commission.

Please note that self-nominations shall not be considered as well as incomplete applications.
