They must be actively conducting scientific work, research, or studies related to the African Great Lakes, including their tributaries, wetlands, or human dimensions such as management and value chains. Participants are required to have appropriate vaccinations, a valid passport, and the ability to travel to the US and Canada from mid-May through mid-June. They must also have approval from their institution, organization, or university and be free from obligations that would prevent travel. A commitment to return to their home country (or a pre-determined location) after the excursion is necessary. Additionally, accepted participants must agree to submit an abstract to the International Association of Great Lakes Research (IAGLR) conference and deliver an oral presentation on their work during the North American excursion.

This opportunity is designed for women scientists from the African Great Lakes region who are engaged in research on the lakes themselves or on associated water systems such as rivers, wetlands, marshes, lagoons, oxbow lakes, and aquifers.

While the African Great Lakes remain the program’s central focus, studies on connected water bodies are also considered vital, as they contribute to the broader scientific understanding of these ecosystems. Applicants working on systems like Lake Tana in Ethiopia, Lake Baringo in Kenya, or Lake Rweru in Burundi/Rwanda are welcome to apply, provided their work can be meaningfully linked to the larger scientific body of knowledge on the African Great Lakes. However, research conducted outside of the African Great Lakes countries does not qualify for this program.

The African Center for Aquatic Research and Education (ACARE)’s vision is to create a world where millions of Africans can depend on healthy African Great Lakes for food, clean water, and reliable employment, supporting a climate of justice, equity, democracy, and peace.
