UN Volunteer in Gender Equality

Under the guidance of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Envoy on Youth, the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

As part of a team, the youth volunteer will support OSGEYs work on gender equality by

  • Supporting the Program Officer/Gender Specialist in implementing the OSGEYs approach to meaningful youth inclusion in the Beijing+25 process and Generation Equality Forum
  • Supporting the Program Officer/Gender Specialist in strategically promoting political participation as a focus area for OSGEY, including specifically the organization of a forthcoming conference on Young Women’s Political Participation
  • Supporting the development of key messages, briefing notes, background notes and talking points for the Youth Envoy
  • Providing technical support for research activities
  • Providing overall programmatic support including organizing side events, meetings, webinars and communication campaigns on gender equality
  • Supporting writing proposals for funding for initiatives and donor reporting
  • Liaising with different arms of the UN system, civil society organizations, feminist organizations, youth-led and youth-serving organizations
  • Participating in coordination meetings within and outside the UN system on behalf of OSGEY
  • Promoting the mainstreaming of gender equality youth and youth volunteer perspectives in the work of UN field operations across all UN pillars (development, peace and security, human rights, humanitarian), including in joint initiatives (e.g. in the framework of projects under the Peacebuilding Fund, the SDG Fund, the UNDP-DPPA Joint Programme, the Spotlight Initiative, etc.)
  • Performing other duties as required

Furthermore, UN Youth Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take an active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day)
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

The duration of your assignment is 12 months.

Benefits

  • A volunteer receives a Volunteer Living Allowance (VLA) per month and is paid at the end of each month to cover housing, utilities, transportation, communications and other basic needs.
  • UN Youth Volunteers are provided a settling-in-grant (SIG) at the start of the assignment (if the volunteer did not reside in the duty station for at least 6 months prior to taking up the assignment) and also in the event of a permanent reassignment to another duty station.
  • UNV provides life, health, permanent disability insurances as well as assignment travel, annual leave, full integration in the UN security framework (including residential security reimbursements).
  • UN Volunteers are paid Daily Subsistence Allowance at the UN rate for official travels, flight tickets for the final repatriation travel (if applicable)

Eligibilities

  • Candidate age: between 18 and 29 throughout the entire duration of their assignment.
  • Required degree level: Bachelor degree or equivalent
  • Education – Additional Comments:
    • Recognized First Level University degree in one of the following fields: Gender, Feminist Studies, Human Rights, Political Science, International Development or other relevant subject area
    • Fluency in English (both oral and written); excellent writing skills
  • Required experience: 12 Months
  • Experience remark:
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and positive working attitude
    • Strong ability to multi-task and a drive for on-time delivery
  • Desirable:
    • Relevant formal or informal experience in gender and youth policies and programmes would be considered an asset
    • Previous formal or informal experience of working for/with feminist organizations, women’s rights or human rights organizations is an added advantage
    • Fluency in another Official UN language, in addition to English, would be considered an asset
  • Language skills: English(Mandatory), Level – Fluent
  • Area of expertise: Gender equality and the advancement of women
  • Area of expertise details:
    • Recognized First Level University degree in one of the following fields: Gender, Feminist Studies, Human Rights, Political Science, International Development or other relevant subject area
    • Fluency in English (both oral and written); excellent writing skills
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and positive working attitude
    • Strong ability to multi-task and a drive for on-time delivery
