The Bloomberg Harvard Visiting Scholars Program is a new residential research program offered by the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University for researchers whose work focuses on urban problem-solving and city leadership. The program provides selected scholars with dedicated time and an academic environment to advance rigorous, policy-relevant research.

Selected Visiting Scholars may spend one semester or a full academic year in residence at the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University. During their residency, scholars receive dedicated time and an academic environment to advance the research project proposed in their application. They also become part of Harvard’s multidisciplinary intellectual community, connecting with faculty, researchers, students, and practitioners working on important urban and public-sector challenges.
The program welcomes researchers from a variety of academic disciplines and professional backgrounds, provided they meet the required qualifications. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or comparable terminal research degree and currently hold a faculty or research appointment at a degree-granting university or recognized research institution. The program is designed for researchers who can bring meaningful expertise and perspectives to the study of cities and urban governance.
Research proposals should address a significant urban problem or city leadership challenge and demonstrate potential contributions to both research and practical applications. Areas of particular interest include mayoral leadership and management, high-performing teams, organizational innovation, evidence-based policy, data and artificial intelligence for decision-making, and cross-sector collaboration. The program aims to support research that can contribute to a deeper understanding of how cities can respond effectively to complex challenges and improve outcomes for their communities.

The Center also anticipates being able to sponsor visas for selected scholars, subject to institutional policies and individual circumstances.

Eligibilities
- Applicants should:
- Hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) or comparable terminal research degree.
- At the time of application, hold a current faculty or research appointment at a degree-granting university or recognized research institution.
- Have research aligned with the Bloomberg Center for Cities mission.
- Propose a specific research project focused on an urban problem or city leadership challenge.
- Demonstrate the significance of the proposed project for research and practice.
Application Process
- Applicants should follow the required steps:
- Prepare a research proposal for a specific project to pursue during the residency.
- Explain the urban problem or city leadership challenge addressed by the research.
- Describe the research questions, theoretical basis, research design, methodology, significance, expected outputs, and potential impact.
- Submit the application through the official Harvard Bloomberg Center for Cities application portal.
- Applicants may be invited for an interview with the selection committee.
- Selected applicants are formally appointed as Bloomberg Harvard Visiting Scholars.
