The Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) / Economic Analysis and Policy Division (EAPD), in the Development Research Branch (DRB),. The internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension up to a maximum of 6 months total depending on the needs of the Department.
For more information about the Division, please visit, https://www.un.org/development/desa/dpad/. This unpaid internship is designed to be in person and full-time at the New York duty station. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or in the office to which they are assigned. Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Duties may include but are not limited to

  • Conduct policy-oriented research and analysis on emerging global development, economic and sustainable development issues with a particular focus on the role of the UN;
  • Assist with substantive inputs for branch publications and other research activities;
  • Assist with the preparation of mandated reports, analytical notes, and other briefing materials;
  • Assist with statistical analysis including the preparation of tables and graphs and other visual materials;
  • Draft written inputs for EAPD research products, as needed.

The intern is expected to:

  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and a personal commitment to the ideals of the United Nations Charter; and
  •  Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes the willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Eligibilities

  •  Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  • Be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Subject to review on a case-by-case basis, applicants within a few years from graduation who could not apply earlier and who are in an early stage of their careers; as a first-time entry into the workforce; are changing careers or due to compelling family circumstances.
  •  Be computer literate in standard software applications and statistical/econometric software.
  •  Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the Internship Programme.
