The internship is located with the Global Programme for Strengthening the Capacities of Member States to Prevent and Combat Organized and Serious Crimes (GPTOC) in the Implementation Support Section (ISS), Organized Crime and Illicit Trafficking Branch (OCB), Division for Treaty Affairs (DTA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna (Austria).

The internship is for a minimum of two months with the desired starting date of 10 June 2019, is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a professional staff of the office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

The intern shall undertake the following duties which may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Undertake research work, using electronic sources, in the field of transnational organized crime with particular emphasis on international cooperation in criminal matters as well as other relevant topics as required;
  2. Assist in the drafting of concept notes and background documents taking stock of existing knowledge on a specific issue in order to suggest operational ways forwards for the Programme;
  3. Assist the GPTOC team in desk work, with fact-checking, editing and proof-reading;
  4. Prepare training material for technical assistance activities such as training workshops;
  5. Assist in the preparation of ad hoc events;
  6. Ensure the efficient and accurate collection and organization of data through such tasks as establishing and maintaining files using accepted organizational methods;
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.

Due regard will be paid to the importance of recruiting the staff on as wide a geographical basis as possible. P.S.- English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.

Eligibilities

  1. Education and Skills
  • To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
    • be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher)
    • be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
    • have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of graduation
  • Possess an academic background in the field of law, political science, international relations, security studies, criminal justice or related discipline;
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications, including proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the programme, but are encouraged to list all relevant work experience in their application.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required for the internship.

Client Orientation: Considers all those to whom services are provided to be “clients” and seeks to see things from clients’ point of view; establishes and maintains productive partnerships with clients by gaining their trust and respect; identifies clients’ needs and matches them to appropriate solutions; monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems; keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects; meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.
  4. Technological Awareness: Keeps abreast of available technology; understands applicability and limitation of technology to the work of the office; actively seeks to apply technology to appropriate tasks; shows willingness to learn new technology.
