In order to fulfill its humanitarian mandate, it is imperative for the ICRC to have effective security and crisis management that identifies and mitigates against risks that threaten our global workforce, assets, and reputation, and provides the framework for a rapid and professional response when a serious security incident or a large-scale emergency occurs. The Security and Crisis Management Support Unit (SCMS) bears chief responsibility for security policy and the provision of operational support through guidance, training, and field missions, as well as facilitating and instigating emergency procedures. The 4 main functions of the unit are 1) Research, Analysis and Development, 2) Security and Safety Risk Management 3) Crisis Management and 4) Capacity Building.

This traineeship position will focus primarily on the capacity-building function of the SCMS unit’s work.

The SCMS unit provides a series of courses on security and crisis management for ICRC managers in the field, oversees the content of personal security training for field personnel, contributes to training provided by other units within the ICRC and provides tailored training modules and workshops.

  • Your strong organizational skills will be key to support the delivery of these courses in collaboration with their Learning and Development department in Geneva and with their regional training centres by updating and organizing course materials, assisting with targeting participants and sending invitations to staff for training and maintaining course archives.
  • You will participate in the facilitation of courses and workshops held in Geneva and help ICRC to improve their didactic techniques.
  • You will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of a number of didactic tools produced by the SCMS unit to assist staff in the management of security and safety risks, including videos and virtual reality tools, such as their newly developed Safety and Security Risk Management videos.
  • You will support the smooth organization and take minutes at several technical working group meetings particularly in relation to RCRC Movement Security and the Security and Safety Forum.
  • You will be responsible for updating and editing their intranet pages, including the institution’s reference library on security and crisis management, including its conversion into a new Wiki format, as well as supporting them with other internal communication pieces to highlight the work of the unit to other departments and field delegations.
  •  In the face of operational crises, you will support the running and minute-taking of Task Force meetings.

  • A 12 months full-time contract based in Geneva, Switzerland will be provided.

Eligibilities

  • Certifications / Education required:
    • A Bachelor’s degree in the social sciences (Master’s degree an advantage).
  • Professional Experience required:
    • Some relevant work experience (including internships, volunteer work) but no more than 2 years of work experience in total (applicants with more than this will automatically be excluded from consideration).
  • Desired profile and skills:
    • Insight into the ICRC and its mandate, and an understanding of the wider Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.
    • Demonstrated interest in the field of security, risk management, or crisis management and response.
    • Experience organizing and/or facilitating workshops, conferences, or training courses an asset.
    • Experience with a knowledge-based software is an asset.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English essential. Working proficiency in French an asset, including additional command of any of the following languages: Arabic, Russian or Spanish.
    • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
    • Excellent social and interpersonal skills in a multicultural environment.
    • Flexible and adaptable.
    • Ability to think and act independently and creatively, to work with colleagues at all levels, to multitask and to handle tight deadlines.
    • Previous field experience is an asset.
