The African Union (AU), a Pan-African continental body established to promote unity, solidarity, and cooperation among the peoples and States of Africa, plays a central role in advancing the continent’s rapid integration and sustainable development. Headquartered in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the AU works to strengthen Africa’s position globally while implementing strategic frameworks that foster peace, development, governance, and economic transformation. In line with its mission to build institutional capacity and effectively implement its organizational structure, the African Union Commission offers an Internship Program for citizens of AU Member States.

The African Union Internship Program is a full-time professional development opportunity designed to complement participants’ academic learning while providing meaningful workplace experience within a multicultural and dynamic environment. The program seeks to expose young professionals to the inner workings of the AU at an early stage in their careers, strengthening both their technical competencies and soft skills. It also serves as a grooming platform for future African leaders by equipping them with firsthand knowledge of continental governance systems and policy implementation processes.

Interns are placed across various AU departments and directorates, where they provide administrative and technical support to programs and projects. These departments include areas such as Agriculture and Sustainable Environment, Economic Development and Trade, Education and Innovation, Infrastructure and Energy, Political Affairs and Security, Health and Social Development, Human Resources, Legal Counsel, Women, Gender and Youth, Communication, and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), among others.

The AU promotes core values including respect for diversity, teamwork, transparency, accountability, integrity, professionalism, and knowledge sharing. As such, the Internship Program encourages applications from qualified individuals with diverse academic backgrounds who demonstrate a strong interest in the AU’s mission and the ability to collaborate effectively across cultures. Through hands-on engagement and intercultural learning, interns gain practical experience while contributing meaningfully to the African Union’s continental objectives.

Eligibilities

  • Actively enrolled in at least the final year of a Bachelor’s degree program OR
  • Must have obtained a Bachelor’s degree or an advanced/ post graduate (Masters) qualification in a related academic field;
  • Be nationals of a Member State of the African Union.
  • Be full time students currently enrolled in the final year of their Bachelors or graduate school program.
  • Be fluent in at least one of the African Union working languages (Arabic, English, French or Portuguese).
  • Be no more than thirty-two (32) years of age at the time of selection.
  • Possess the highest standard of moral conduct and integrity.
  • Have not been convicted of any serious criminal offence excluding minor traffic offences.
  • Prior work experience is not required for the internship positions.
  • Proficient computer skills (MS Word, Excel and Power Point)
  • Proficiency with e-mail and internet applications,
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing

Application Process

  • Application for admission to the AU Internship Program are submitted online.
  • If you are a first-time user of our online registration system, you will need to register before you can log in.
  • Applicants must submit the following supporting documents with their online application:
    • A motivation letter indicating what they expect to gain out of the internship program
    • A copy of valid passport or national identity card
    • Certified copies of relevant academic certificates
    • Current curriculum vitae (CV)
    • Recommendation letter for internship from the institution of learning that they are attending
    • Upon successful submission of their application, applicants will receive an email confirmation that their application has been successfully received.
