Call for applications for the 2024 Marlène and Paolo Fresco Fellowship!

The goal of the Marlène and Paolo Fresco Fellowship is to promote and encourage more research on the cultural contacts that took place between the Mediterranean region and the African continent between around 1250 and 1750. For the spring semester of 2025, it is a six-month residential fellowship (January-June).

Post-doctoral researchers working in disciplines such as art history, archaeology, expressive cultural history, musicology, economic history, intellectual, political, and religious history, literature, and languages who are interested in studying African history are eligible for this grant. Advanced research projects that focus on the interactions between Italy and the African continent in the early modern era—which is historically defined as the 14th through the 17th centuries—will be given preference.

I Tatti will be the fellows’ home for six months, from January to June 2025. Fellows have access to the Biblioteca Berenson seven days a week and can have lunch with other Appointees Monday through Friday, among other advantages offered by the Harvard Centre. Biblioteca Berenson offers fellows a designated workspace. Throughout the entirety of their fellowship, fellows are prohibited from taking on any additional responsibilities, including part-time teaching roles. The fellowship cannot be used in conjunction with another prize or fellowship.

Made possible by a kind donation from Paolo Fresco, there is a fixed monthly grant and also a one-time addition grant for moving costs. Fellows must reside in the Florence region and spend at least three days a week at the Centre due to the residential character of the fellowship. If feasible, a rent-free flat with utility costs will be reserved for the fellow’s use. In the event that a flat is not available, a housing subsidy will be provided to assist with the expense of rent.

It is the fellow’s responsibility to secure a visa, a room permit, health insurance, and—if necessary—to bring along family members. The fellow is responsible for determining if a visa is needed and, if so, obtaining one in advance of departure. Applications must be written in English or Italian and must be submitted electronically. Scholars can apply to only one type of fellowship at I Tatti per academic year.

  • The grant is USD 5,200 per month, made possible by a generous grant from Paolo Fresco,
  • Plus a one-time supplement (maximum USD 1,500) towards relocation expenses.
  • In light of the residential nature of the fellowship, Fellows must live in the Florence area and spend at least three days a week at the Center. When possible, an apartment will be set aside for the fellow’s use, rent free, but with charges for utilities. If an apartment is not available, a housing subsidy will be offered to help offset rental costs.
  • Fellows enjoy all the privileges of the Harvard Center, including use of the Biblioteca Berenson seven days a week and lunch with other Appointees from Monday through Friday.
  • Fellows are offered a reserved space to work in the Biblioteca Berenson.

  • At the time of application, scholars must have a PhD in hand and will be asked to upload a scan of the certificate.
  • They must not be working on a second PhD.
  • Applicants must be fluent in either English, Italian, or French.
  • Successful applicants will have a solid background in African history and its global exchanges in the early modern world.
  • The fellow will be expected to carry out original research on the topic for which they have been awarded their fellowship.
  • Term Fellowships at I Tatti can be held only once and cannot be deferred. Term Fellowships are intended for scholars who have not previously held appointments at I Tatti (with the exception of Graduate Fellows).
Eligible Regions: African countries.
