Many programs are available around the world. Visiting Fellowships illustrate the British Academy’s profound and ongoing commitment to international engagement. The aim of this program is to ensure that the UK remains an attractive, welcoming, and productive research environment for academics globally. Through this program, the Academy aims to:
- Enhance and build new links between scholars from around the globe and in the UK;
- Foster opportunities and encourage the development of new and future partnerships for collaborative research into the humanities and social sciences
- To enable academics from across the globe to undertake research and/or professional development with UK colleagues;
- And strengthen the UK’s research bases in the humanities and the social sciences.
Furthermore, participation in a Visiting Fellowship Program fosters a unique exchange of knowledge and ideas. Fellows gain exposure to new research methodologies and perspectives, while also contributing their own expertise to the host institution. This cross-pollination of ideas can lead to significant advancements in various academic disciplines.

Eligibilities
The elibilities for the British Academy Visiting Fellowships Program is as follows:
- Applicants must be postdoctoral or have equivalent experience at the time of application.
- Applicants must not be in the process of completing a PhD or awaiting the outcome of their viva/submission of corrections at the time of applying.
- Applicants must be based outside the UK at the time of application. Those already living in the UK or who are employed primarily by a UK institution are not eligible.
- Applicants cannot conduct research related to their Visiting Fellowship outside the UK, but short fieldwork trips abroad may be possible. During the award, Visiting Fellows may normally spend a total of one month’s worth of such fieldwork outside the UK (if holding a fellowship for six months).
- Applicants may be on permanent or fixed-term contracts, but the contract must not end before the end date of the Visiting Fellowship. Independent scholars are welcome to apply.
- Applicants must demonstrate that they have been in contact with their UK host institution prior to the application.
Application Process
The application process for the British Academy Visiting Fellowships Program is as follows:
- Applicants must submit their application electronically through the British Academy Flexi-Grant® Grant Management System (GMS).
- Applications must be approved by the relevant authority at the chosen UK host institution.
- The application must include:
- A personal statement outlining the applicant’s career background and research experience.
- An abstract summarizing the proposed research.
- A description of the proposed research program, methodology, and timeline.
- An explanation of why the applicant chose the specific UK host institution and how the fellowship will benefit both the researcher and the institution.
- A budget outlining the expected costs of the fellowship. This budget should not exceed £40,000 and should include:
- Up to £15,000 for subsistence and accommodation costs.
- Up to £10,000 for research expenses (e.g., archival research, training, conferences, and dissemination).
- Up to £3,000 for travel expenses.
- Up to £12,000 to support the UK host institution.
