The Policy Innovation Lab within Stellenbosch University’s School for Data Science and Computational Thinking invites exceptional candidates to apply for an 18-month Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Science and Policy Innovation. This unique opportunity is designed for an emerging leader eager to apply cutting-edge computational methods to solve complex societal challenges in the public sector. The Lab is a dynamic, collaborative environment focused on the dual challenge of Responsible AI for Policymaking. This means the work encompasses not only the technical application of data and AI within policy processes but also the crucial task of shaping policy itself to ensure that all uses of technology are ethical, equitable, and accountable.

The Postdoctoral Researcher will be instrumental in delivering the Lab’s mandate by:
- Leading applied research projects, utilizing a combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies.
- Developing practical tools, including innovative app development, to enhance policymaking efficiency in South Africa
- Working directly with policymakers and government partners to fundamentally rethink how policy problems and solutions are framed.
- Producing high-quality, peer-reviewed research while actively supporting the Lab’s capacity-building and training programmes.

Conditions:
- Duration: 18-month fixed-term appointment, subject to availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
- Starting date: 1 January 2026.
- End date: 30 June 2027
- Fellowship value: R420 000 per year. Please note that postdoctoral fellowships are tax-free as fellows are not appointed as employees. Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible for employee benefits.
- The University retains the right either not to make an appointment or to extend the closing date.

Eligibilities
- Applicants must possess a PhD in engineering, data science, statistics, computer science, mathematics, economics or a related field.
- Applicants must have a proven interest in using technology for societal impact.
- Applicants must be able to demonstrate strong programming abilities.
- Applicants must possess strong quantitative research skills.
- Applicants must be able to work effectively in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
- Applicants must be willing to relocate to Stellenbosch for the duration of the fellowship and work on campus during regular working hours.
