The Fellowship is the start of an exciting new chapter in your career. It opens the door to a career with a range of international agencies, NGOs, development consultancies and governmental organizations.
Oxford Policy Fellows are high-caliber lawyers with an exceptional skill set. The Fellows have a strong academic track-record, with most of them holding master’s degrees in law or a related field. While all Fellows have legal experience, the nature of their experience is diverse.
Working in another country in a high-pressure environment requires a plethora of soft skills such as interpersonal skills, resilience, flexibility and an ability to solve problems. These skills help Fellows to adapt to a dynamic environment and to foster trusting relationships with government colleagues.
To date, OPF’s 30 Fellows have come from 12 different countries from around the world. Nearly 60 percent of them from LMICs (Lower Middle-Income Countries).
The Oxford Policy Fellowship provides governments with a new kind of technical assistance. They place junior professionals in government ministries for two years, freeing up significant time and resources for senior officials. They are now starting the fifth year of the program, and welcome the opportunity to work with more government counterparts who see added value in such support.
These are just some of the activities Fellows might support:
- Conducting legal research, from specific contract terms to broader options for regulatory framework design
- Bridging the gap between policymakers and legal departments
- Supporting policy initiatives with appropriate legislative and regulatory frameworks
- Liaising with donor-funded short-term senior legal technical assistance
Being part of the Fellowship gives you access to a wider international network. Government managers and their Fellows will be invited to their annual knowledge-sharing conference where they will have the opportunity to share experiences and discuss similar challenges, as well as to interact with policy specialists from academia, the British Government, and the private sector.

- The Fellowship provides medical insurance and a duty of care for all Fellows as well as a housing financial contribution if required.

Eligibilities
- Open for applicants of all nationalities who are qualified lawyers.
- Applicants with excellent academic qualifications and depending on the specific post, a law degree, an LLM, a Master’s in Law, a Master’s in Public Policy, or a related field will be required.
- Applicants should have a number of years of relevant legal and/or policy work experience.
- Work or voluntary experience in low- and middle-income countries is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated interest in International Development is essential to become a Fellow.
- Applicants must have the willingness to be posted to any country in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia.
