Call for applications for the New Roots Institute Fellowship 2026!
The New Roots Institute Fellowship is a structured leadership and advocacy program designed to equip emerging changemakers with the knowledge, skills, and supportive community needed to challenge industrial animal agriculture at both campus and community levels. The fellowship is built to support participants at different stages of engagement, offering a flexible two-phase structure that combines foundational learning with real-world advocacy experience. Through a carefully designed curriculum, fellows gain a deep understanding of factory farming systems while developing leadership, communication, organizing, and strategic advocacy skills that extend beyond the duration of the program.

The fellowship begins with Phase One, known as the Leadership Academy, a six-week virtual summer program focused on building core competencies. During this phase, participants explore the social, environmental, ethical, and political dimensions of industrial animal agriculture while strengthening essential leadership and advocacy skills. The Leadership Academy serves as both a standalone opportunity and a gateway to further engagement, allowing participants to gain a strong foundation before committing to longer-term action. Fellows are permitted limited absences with prior notice and completion of required make-up work, ensuring flexibility while maintaining program integrity.

Participants who wish to deepen their involvement may continue into Phase Two, the Academic Year Fellowship. This phase emphasizes hands-on leadership, with fellows designing and leading advocacy campaigns on their campuses and within their communities. Campaigns focus on improving food systems, shifting cultural norms through education and communication, and advancing policy or legislative solutions. Throughout this phase, fellows receive individualized coaching, strategic guidance, and access to tailored resources from New Roots Institute staff and partner organizations, allowing campaigns to align with local contexts and personal goals.
Upon completion, fellows become part of the New Roots Institute Alumni Network, a global community of more than 600 advocates committed to ending factory farming. Alumni benefit from ongoing leadership development, professional growth opportunities, mentorship pathways, and access to events and specialized programs. Many alumni continue their engagement by mentoring new fellows, contributing to workshops, or pursuing career opportunities within the broader movement, including pathways such as the paid Teaching Fellowship that supports future cohorts.
