Applications for the 2022 Taiwan Fellowship, which Center for Chinese Studies administers on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will be accepted between May 1st and June 30th, 2021.

MOFA Taiwan Fellowship is established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), R.O.C. to award foreign experts and scholars interested in researches related to Taiwan (such as New Southbound Policy), cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia Pacific, Sinology and global issues (including but not limited to the post-Covid-19 era and political/economic dynamics, cybersecurity, national defense strategy and gender equality) to conduct advanced research at universities or academic institutions in Taiwan.

The terms of fellowship are 3 to 12 months and recipients will be provided financial assistance as follows:

  1. Monthly grants are paid at the beginning of every month.
    1. Professors, associate professors, research fellows, or associate research fellows: NT$60,000.
    2. Assistant professors, assistant research fellows, or doctoral candidates: NT$50,000.
  2. One round-trip, economy-class ticket for the most direct route to Taiwan (The subsidy will be decided by MOFA in accordance with the relevant regulations)
  3. Accident insurance (plus a medical insurance for accidental injuries) coverage of NT$1 million

Eligibilities

  • A scholar’s field of study should be in the social sciences and humanities, with a topic related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, mainland China, the Asia Pacific, and Sinology.
  • Foreign nationals who are professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students at related departments of overseas universities, or are research fellows at an equivalent level in academic institutions abroad.
  • Candidates recommended by ROC (Taiwan) overseas missions with a field of study on Taiwan’s foreign relations or cross-strait relations.

Application Process

  • You have to prepare your resume and research proposal.
  • Two letters of recommendations or one letter of recommendation and one letter of agreement from the highest administrative director of applicant’s institution.
  • Applicants should print their complete application form and send all application documents to an R.O.C(Taiwan) Embassy or Representative Office by post.
  • The candidates should contact ROC universities or research institutions and obtain the letter of consent for them to do research in Taiwan.
  • The candidates should send the letter of consent to Taiwan Fellowship team (Email:[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected] ) by December 31st, and check the Terms of Agreement for the Taiwan Fellowship.
