Application for ICGEB South African Women in Biotechnology Programme SAWBP – PhD Fellowship 2025 is open now!

The ICGEB-SAWBP PhD Fellowship Scheme, in partnership with the  South African Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation will support South African women researchers intending to study towards a PhD degree, in Biotechnology at the Cape Town Component. The SAWBP program promotes the interaction and mobility of South African women Biotechnology researchers and the ICGEB community, including mobility support to visit other ICGEB Components in Trieste, Italy, and New Delhi, India . Proposed doctoral research projects must be innovative and fall within one of the ICGEB Cape Town Component macro areas of research, namely: Infectious Diseases, Non-Communicable Diseases, Bioinformatics, Plant Systems Biology, and Virology. The fellowship supports PhD studies and offers a grant ranging from $10,000 to $100,000. This fellowship is open exclusively to South African female nationals who hold a Master’s degree in life sciences or related fields, have a strong academic record, and show a clear motivation to pursue biotechnology research. The fellowship covers a period of up to three years, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

The SAWBP–PhD Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for South African women to become part of an international scientific community, allowing them to build global networks, access state-of-the-art laboratories, and collaborate with world-class researchers. Fellows will be embedded within the ICGEB Cape Town Component, which focuses on infectious diseases, non-communicable diseases, plant biotechnology, and synthetic biology. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, offering advanced training in genomics, molecular diagnostics, vaccine development, and gene editing technologies.
