The Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) at the University of Freiburg has opened applications for the Sustainable Governance Senior Fellowship Programme for Researchers from Africa 2027-2028. The fellowship is designed to strengthen academic collaboration between Africa and Germany while supporting outstanding research in the fields of sustainable governance, humanities, and social sciences. The programme provides experienced researchers with the opportunity to pursue independent research in an internationally recognized academic environment and engage with scholars from diverse disciplines.

The fellowship is open to researchers of any nationality who are based at an academic institution in an African country. Fellows will spend six months at FRIAS, where they will benefit from access to the University of Freiburg’s research facilities, interdisciplinary academic community, and international network of scholars. The programme aims to encourage innovative research projects that contribute to sustainable governance while fostering long-term academic partnerships between African institutions and the University of Freiburg.
Selected fellows will receive financial support according to their employment status, including either a fellowship contract with the University of Freiburg or an alternative compensation arrangement. In addition, fellows receive research cost contributions and reimbursement for travel expenses to and from Germany. Throughout the fellowship period, participants are expected to remain in Freiburg on a full-time basis to actively engage in academic discussions, seminars, and collaborative research activities.
The selection process is highly competitive and based on academic excellence, research quality, and the potential impact of the proposed project. Applicants must submit a well-developed research proposal focused on sustainable governance, supported by a letter of cooperation from an academic partner at the University of Freiburg. Successful fellows become part of a vibrant international research community and gain access to valuable academic resources and global networking opportunities.

- Financial Support: Depending on the fellow’s circumstances, selected applicants receive either a fellowship contract with the University of Freiburg or alternative financial compensation. Fellows also receive research funding during the fellowship period.
- Research Cost Contribution: Financial support is provided for research-related expenses to facilitate the successful completion of the proposed project.
- Travel Support: Reimbursement of inbound and outbound travel expenses between the fellow’s home country and Germany is provided.

Eligibilities
- Applicants should:
- Hold a completed PhD with at least eight years of postdoctoral research experience.
- Be based at an academic institution in an African country.
- Have at least five peer-reviewed publications since 1 January 2017.
- Conduct research in the Humanities or Social Sciences with a focus on sustainable governance.
- Secure a letter of cooperation from a professor at the University of Freiburg.
