The ARI Postdoctoral Fellowship offers early-career scholars the opportunity to conduct advanced and independent research in the humanities or social sciences with a strong focus on Asia. Fellows are expected to pursue original projects while aligning their research with one of ARI’s thematic clusters. These clusters provide both intellectual structure and opportunities for collaboration:

  • Migration and Mobilities, which examines dynamics of movement, migration, diaspora, and the circulation of ideas and practices.

  • Food Politics and Society, which explores food systems as sites of social, cultural, political, and economic change.

  • Inter-Asia Engagements, which promotes interdisciplinary approaches to understanding connections and exchanges across Asian contexts.

  • Science, Technology and Society, which investigates the evolving relationship between scientific and technological change and its societal implications.

Fellows play an active role in ARI’s research community. Beyond advancing their own scholarship, they are expected to contribute to cluster activities, engage in collaborative projects, and take leadership in organizing academic events such as workshops, seminars, and conferences. They are also encouraged to develop new programs, particularly in relation to grant applications, that can expand the institute’s research profile.

In addition to research responsibilities, fellows undertake administrative and committee work, which is considered essential to the effective functioning of ARI. Participation in these areas provides opportunities to contribute to institutional development while gaining experience in academic service.

The fellowship also emphasizes professional growth and scholarly exchange. Fellows are encouraged to attend and contribute to seminars, discussions, and social events that create a vibrant intellectual environment. These activities are designed to foster dialogue across disciplines and to strengthen connections between fellows, faculty, and visiting researchers.

At the same time, the fellowship provides protected time and institutional support for individual research and publication. Fellows are expected to produce high-quality outputs, including journal articles or monographs, during their tenure. The position thus balances personal scholarly advancement with meaningful engagement in collaborative and administrative responsibilities.

Hosted at one of Singapore’s leading universities, the ARI Postdoctoral Fellowship offers access to excellent academic resources and a dynamic intellectual community. It provides a platform to build research networks, to contribute to interdisciplinary debates on Asia, and to establish a strong foundation for future academic careers. Applicants are advised to ensure that their proposed research projects clearly align with the themes and priorities of ARI’s research clusters.
