Call for housing projects for the 2025 World Habitat Award!
World Habitat Awards recognise and highlight innovative, outstanding and sometimes revolutionary housing ideas, projects and programmes from across the world. More than 360 outstanding World Habitat Awards projects have been recognised over the years, demonstrating substantial, lasting improvements in living conditions.
The World Habitat Awards competition has been run by World Habitat in partnership with UN-Habitat since 1985. In that time some of the world’s most remarkable and innovative housing projects have received international recognition for their work. This year World Habitat will be presenting Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards to the most outstanding projects and programmes.
World Habitat wants to hear about projects from around the world that:
- focus on affordable and adequate housing;
- have taken action to address the climate emergency;
- are in progress or have been completed in the last ten years;
- are taking steps to promote diversity, equality and inclusion; and
- have been designed and/ or delivered in close collaboration with the residents/ local community
The first part of the judging process involves establishing an initial shortlist of around 40 entries who best meet the criteria explained above. This may involve asking for more detail and information about your project. These 40 entries are then put through further – and more detailed – research and discussion until there are a final group of a maximum of ten projects.
From these ten projects, a detailed project summary is compiled for insight for, and discussion by, World Habitat expert advisory group. Each of the final projects is asked to provide two independent referees for World Habitat to approach who can confirm the details described in the entry. Of these final ten, some projects will be awarded Bronze, Silver or Gold awards.
Each entry to the World Habitat Awards goes through a thorough process. World Habitat needs each entry to demonstrate a number of different factors:
- Impact
- Innovation
- Environmental Sustainability
- Viability and Transferability
- Significance

The two GOLD Award-winning projects receive:
- A trophy in recognition of their work to develop and deliver good practice in housing;
- Prize money of £10,000;
- Follow-up support from World Habitat through our exChange programme; and
- Entry to the World Habitat Awards Network, along with the Silver and Bronze winners.
Eligibilities
- Anyone representing or collaborating on an innovative project in the field of housing is welcome to enter: individuals, NGOs, public institutions, private initiatives, academia, United Nations programmes, etc.
- Applications are welcome from anywhere in the world.
Project eligibility –
- must be related to housing.
- must concern projects that are either in progress or finished less than ten years ago, from the date the call for entries closes (3 March 2024).
- cannot be a grant application.
