17th Economix Global Economic Challenges 2019
  • Jakarta

The grand theme for The 17th Economix: Global Economic Challenges, International Essay Competition is ‘Inequality in the Modern Era: An Unresolved Question’. This grand theme stems from the observation that many of the world’s most polarizing issues such as the rise of populism and xenophobia are in fact the long-repressed symptoms of inequality. The growing disparity between the poor and the rich as a consequence of globalization and technological change has made populist narratives very prevalent in societies around the world, the consequences of which are being experienced as of this very moment. This theme requires the participant to explore arguably one of the most pertinent and impactful issues in recent years. Being a very broad phenomenon, inequality uncovers questions related to the ethics, morality, philosophy, and politics in economics–important questions that have unfortunately been sidelined in favor of the cold and elegant precision of mathematics.

There is also a need to examine inequality from a newer and more holistic perspective. Inequality should not only be defined as the gap between the rich and the poor, but it should also be measured multidimensionally. For example, gender inequality and the digital divide are aspects of inequality that also deserve focus and attention. Ultimately, it is hoped that through this event, they may both broaden and deepen the discourse around inequality.
