UN Technology Innovation Labs are accepting applications for the Reboot the Earth Tech Challenge 2019.

Reboot the Earth Challenge is planned as a social coding event that brings young computer programmers, scientists and other interested people together under the auspices of the United Nations to improve upon or build a new software program that addresses the current climate crisis.

Through a series of Tech Challenge in four continents, young people, including students will be presented with the opportunity to use open data and tech concepts to solve a local climate crisis that may be unique to each location and its community needs. The participants will be encouraged to follow the Principles for Digital Development, which have been developed by United Nations Agencies Funds and Programmes and endorsed by International Organizations worldwide.

Climate change is one of the most critical global challenges and today’s youth population is faced with a future that is threatened by its impact, however, they also present an extraordinary opportunity for urgent action as agents of change and creators of innovative climate solutions. Through a series of hackathons in four continents, young people, including students will be presented with the opportunity to use open data and apply tech concepts and practices to solve climate crisis, depending on the community needs and location, the hackathons can focus on a platform such as mobile apps, a desktop operating system, web development or video game development.

Eligibilities

  • All the inputs and outputs of this challenge must be covered by recognized open source and creative commons licensing.
  • Teams can have a maximum of 5 members.
  • All participants should be less than 35 years of age, on the day of the registration.
  • All of the Reboot the Earth Tech Challenges will be conducted in English.
  • The organizer does not cover the cost of travel to the Tech Challenge venues. Participants will need to cover their own cost of travel, accommodations, etc.
