The competition is divided into two age categories. Participants aged 14–18 compete in Category 1, while those aged 19–25 participate in Category 2. For the 2026 event, Category 1 has a maximum word limit of 500 words, while Category 2 allows up to 750 words. The official guidelines state that participants must write on the topic assigned to their age category and should ensure that the essay reflects their own experiences and views.
Participants can write their essays in any one of 12 available languages: Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, or Telugu. Essays may be typed or legibly handwritten on A4 paper. Participants are expected to submit original work, and essays copied or plagiarized from books or the internet will be rejected. The participant’s name, parent’s or guardian’s name, age, and institution name must also be included as required.
Students participating through an institution must first check whether their school or college is registered for the event and follow the submission method chosen by their institution. Institutions may either provide students with an online submission link or collect physical essays and upload them centrally. Young people aged 14–25 who are not enrolled in an institution can participate through the Direct Submission option on the official website.
