Healthy Rich Co. is a project founded by Dana Sitar, a personal finance writer, editor and writing teacher. They publish stories that illuminate the diversity of our relationships with work and money and guides to help you understand finances, take control of your money and love the work you do.
This contest is the first in a series of writing contests dedicated to publishing essays about work and money, all written by budding writers whose voices we don’t hear enough of, like people of color, women, LGBTQ+ and people with disabilities. Their mission is to make work — good work — for writers. That means you get published, get paid, connect with a mentor and join a community that helps you take the next steps in your career.

They know from experience that, as a green writer, a chance to get published and paid is incredible. But those single opportunities are fleeting. Good editors and a strong network are some of the best tools for moving forward. They built those tools into this contest through free mentorship and community membership, so publication with Healthy Rich is more than just another clip — it’s a way to build your career.
Benefits
One 1st-place, one 2nd-place and up to 10 finalists will be published. All winners get a mentor session and lifetime membership in our community of contributors. 1st- and 2nd-place winners also receive a cash prize.

All entrants get a free one-year subscription ($70 value) to Field Notes, an exclusive newsletter series of stories, tips and resources to be a happy and healthy freelancer.

Eligibilities
- Genre: Personal Essay
- Length: 500–2,000 words
- Theme: Work and Womanhood
- Questions to answer: How has your identity as a woman affected your career, jobs and/or your relationship with money?
- All trans and cis women writers 18+, regardless of previous experience or publication.
- Winning essays will fit the theme, showcase exceptional writing, and provide their audience a valuable perspective on work, money or both.
- All submissions must be original and previously unpublished.
Application Process
- Create the essay in a Google Doc with sharing settings on “Anyone on the internet with this link can edit.”
- Fill out the submission form, and add the Google Doc link.
- They require Google Docs because they facilitate collaboration well and anyone can create an account for free. If you prefer to compose elsewhere, just copy+paste your essay into a Doc to submit
- They ask for a summary. Don’t fret over it! They won’t judge your summary. It just helps them confirm your essay fits the theme.
- They don’t publish anything without your permission. You’ll hear from them if they are interested in your essay, and you’ll approve all edits before publication.
