THE CIVICS is a pan-European non-profit organisation, founded in 2021 by three professionals with extensive background in democracy development and civic education. It is supported by partners in different European countries and advised by stakeholders, philanthropies, experts, and civic education agencies in Europe. Europe’s citizens need a future-proof set of civic competences to manage conflicts, cope with complexity and uncertainty, and comprehend the disruptions to democracy. Civic education has an important role in identifying and enhancing those competences, while civic educators need opportunities to grow, learn and exchange. Above all, civic education in Europe needs to rise to the challenges and expectations the world is posing.
Focus on Innovation and Resilience :
The CIF aims to strengthen democratic competencies, foster social cohesion, and promote resilience across the continent. Projects are encouraged to be interdisciplinary, inclusive, and align with key themes such as Democratic Resilience, promoting Trust in civic education, and tackling issues like loneliness, radicalisation, and polarisation. Successful applicants will receive a grant ranging from €10,000 to €12,000 to pilot, incubate, and scale their concepts over a 12-month period.
Transnational Reach and Key Benefits :
This is a distinctly European opportunity. The main implementing organisation must be based in a European country, and the project is required to feature a transnational partnership with at least one partner from Wider Europe. This ensures cross-border learning and maximum impact. Beyond the funding, successful grantees are designated as informal NECE Impact Spots, granting immediate access to the extensive NECE (Networking European Civic Education) network. This connection provides unparalleled visibility among European policymakers, researchers, and fellow innovators, offering crucial opportunities for growth, learning, and long-term sustainability.
The organisation upholds the principles of good governance and accountability. It recognises that all activities demand transparency, ethical conduct, and responsible stewardship of resources. By consistently adhering to these principles, it strives to set an example for the very democratic competences it seeks to nurture, ensuring the organisation remains responsive, effective, and trustworthy in the pursuit of its goals.
Benefits
- Financial Support: Successful projects receive a grant of €10,000 to €12,000 for a 12-month period to pilot, incubate, and scale their innovative idea.
- European Network & Visibility: Selected projects gain the status of informal NECE Impact Spots. This provides direct access to the wider NECE (Networking European Civic Education) pan-European network of civic educators, researchers, and policymakers. Opportunity to showcase project outcomes at major European events, such as the NECE Festival.
- Capacity Building & Growth: The funding supports the project through the critical pilot, incubation, and scaling-up phases. It helps young NGOs and civic educators gain the visibility and resources needed to make their work more effective and sustainable long-term.
- Strategic Alignment: Projects gain relevance by aligning with key European debates on themes like democratic resilience, trust, and polarisation. It offers a platform for cross-border collaboration and mutual learning with other European innovators.
