The CFLI is a program designed to support small-scale, high-impact projects in developing countries, which align with Global Affairs Canada’s thematic priority areas for engagement. Local partners primarily conceive and design the program’s projects.

Local civil society organizations, including non-governmental organizations, and other local institutions will receive the majority of CFLI funding. Other entities, such as international, intergovernmental, multilateral and regional organizations may be eligible for funding, provided they are working with local partners and on local projects that are consistent with the objectives of the CFLI. The CFLI is always looking to fund innovative projects that deliver measurable results.
The average CFLI contribution is $30,000 to $50,000 Canadian Dollars (CAD$100,000 is the maximum allocation amount for a project eligible under CFLI).

All projects must align with at least 1 of the following thematic priorities, and they need to be completed between the date of signature of the Contribution Agreement and February 26, 2027:
- Inclusive governance;
- Growth that works for everyone;
- Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in all their diversity;
- Human dignity; or
- Environment and climate action.
The proposals can be completed in English, French, or Spanish. In addition to the completed application form, applicants must also submit their organization’s registration status and evidence of legal incorporation in the Dominican Republic. Applications will be assessed on their merits by a selection committee.
The Canadian high commission or embassy in question chooses and approves projects. The CFLI also serves to support positive bilateral relations between Canada and recipient countries and their civil societies by deepening contacts and supporting local endeavors.
The Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) funds small, high-impact projects in over 120 countries that are eligible for Official Development Assistance (ODA). The CFLI has an annual budget of $26.8 million, with projects averaging $31,000 each. Local organizations plan and carry out projects, while the Canadian Embassy or High Commission selects and approves them. The CFLI is always looking to fund innovative projects that support meaningful change in communities abroad.

Eligibilities
- Local non-governmental, community and not-for-profit organizations, legally incorporated in the Dominican Republic,
- Local academic institutions working on local projects,
- International non-governmental organizations working on local development activities, legally incorporated in the Dominican Republic,
- Multilateral and regional institutions, organizations and agencies working on local development activities, and
- Canadian non-governmental and not-for-profit organizations that are working on local development activities and are legally incorporated in the Dominican Republic or in partnership with local non-governmental organizations legally incorporated in the Dominican Republic.
