BRAC Social Innovation Lab (SIL), along with H&M Foundation (H&MF), and The Asia Foundation are collaboratively working under the Collective Impact (CI) Initiative, aiming at advancing women’s welfare, promoting gender equity while further enabling Ready-Made Garments (RMG) industry in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is an export-oriented country and the RMG sector accounts for 83% of it. This sector also employs around 4 million people of which 59% are women, but the sector still adopts traditional methods and equipment making it fall behind in global competitiveness. Without transformative innovation, the sector that has been fueling the growth of the country for so long will slowly diminish. However, the advent of automation is projecting 60% job loss for the RMG workers and the situation is more dire for women garments workers as they are more likely to be victims to the job cuts. Thus, under the project STITCH (Safeguarding Through Innovation and Technology) for RMG, they have launched the “GLOBAL INNOVATION CHALLENGE” inviting transformative business innovations to safeguard the jobs of female RMG workers and also improve the competitiveness of the RMG sector.
